Breastfeeding please help

Newly expecting. Prices of formula are astronomical. I want to know the good the bad and the ugly of breastfeeding. This isn’t a debate on what is better. I formula fed my first two. I want to know everyone’s personal experience. Here are some of my concerns and unknowns in the subject area:

• Alcohol/tobacco use, I enjoy(ed) having a couple drinks on the weekend or a drink out to dinner. I would also have a smoke or two socially with that as well. Dump and pour? How much and how long?
• Sex. Am I going to leak all over his face ? Am I constantly going to be leaking no matter what?
• Cluster feeding/baby constantly being attached/dad not being able to help, am I going to go looney? How soon can I pump for bottles?
• Bleeding cracked nipples/ bigger concern mastitis.

I had previously 4 formula fed babies. My 5th I actually managed to pull through till he was 9 months. So I can compare both.
Let's start with the pros:
1. Sleep! I got so so much more sleep during the newborn phase. He slept in the next to me or in our bed. I could just roll over, get the boob out and that's that. Heck at some point I slept with my boob out and he'd just latch on 🫣
2. Convince. No faffing about with cooling water, steriliser, miscounting scoops, etc.
3. The bond. This is also a con as he is super attached to me but it was lovely to sit and have a starring contest with him while feeding.
4. The monies - self-explanatory
5. No period! (For some including me 🥳)
6. The weight flies off

Cons:
1. Mastitis/cracked nips: I'm not lying I had it twice and it was f***ing brutal. Especially the first couple weeks.
2. Limited diet for mum
3. You're always hungry!
4. Leaking nips
5. Feeding in public if you're self conscious
6. Dad may feel left out
7. Runny poos 💩 (For Baby lol)

Alcohol one drink is ok 2 or more pump and dump. smoking cigarettes is fine it won’t get in to your milk just change your clothes. Smoking weed is a no it’s not safe lord knows how long It takes to not be in your breast milk no test strips are available for it so it’s just a no go! As for bleeding nipples and mastitis get a good nipple butter and make sure to alternate boobs

Do you always have to wear the pads so you don’t leak everywhere? How do you know when you’re fully empty? How do you know when to alternate sides? lol I’m sorry for all the questions.

Also to reply
- not a pot smoker so that’s not a worry
- bleeding cracked nipples scares the hell out of me LOL
- limited diet.. can you elaborate on that for me?
Thank you guys so much

Also- nervous about baby not taking a bottle and I’ll lose my mind without dad being able to help.

The Australian Breastfeeding Association is a great resource!

If your nipples are cracked and bleeding, that's not normal and you will probably need breastfeeding support. An IBCLC would be the best person to go to, and they could answer all your questions as well.

I've had one drink on a night out, then breastfed later that night. No more than one drink over the course of the night and dinner. And she wasn't super young either, definitely over 6 months, probably closer to 12.

Not sure with sex, but in the first six weeks while your supply is settling, you'll likely be a spray machine regardless. Once it settles you'll probably only leak if you go a while between feeds and are very full.

I loved all the contact with breastfeeding/cluster feeding, but it's not for everyone. So you might go a bit looney. I'd get dad to do all the burping if that's the case. And you can pump as soon as your milk comes in!

I will always BF. There is no other option for me, I hate buying formula I hate making formula I hate the time and effort it takes when I can just pull my shirt up and fall back to sleep and he’ll have his full and he’ll fall back to sleep too. I agree w all the pros Patricia said above. The cons…I still ate whatever I wanted. I only got mastitis once and that’s because I overslept and didn’t feed/pump on time. I intro the paci and bottle (for ebm topups) quite early so he took a bottle and I got my breaks…hubby would take the baby on weekend mornings while I slept in as soon as I i wake i’d either BF or pump or both. I went out on the weekends w my gfs and had 1-2 cocktails w food and I’ll just come back 4-5hrs later and feed like normal, takes 2hrs per drink to be fully out so I’d take about that long anyway. The leaking…I wore the maternity singlets w the built in bra and just shoved a pad inside it…the sex, hubby loved the leaking 😂 it turned him on to see me leak/aroused.

Formula, bottles, diapers and wipes will all add up. As a mum that breastfed, used cloth diapers and cloth wipes, my baby had no weekly expenses so he was a very very cheap baby to raise. So if you’re really looking to save money and not spend much, BF is a great idea, so is using reusable diapers and wipes. I didn’t “run out” of anything and yet he had everything.

I think Motherhood has made me more bitter than I realized…

This is such a ramble but I don’t know where else to put it all.

I’m four months in and I don’t really have hobbies right now. I don’t do anything for myself except maybe doomscrolling or listening to a podcast while I breastfeed my baby. I used to craft and have game nights with friends. Activities that usually are at least 2 hour stretches. Now if I have an hour free my mind immediately goes to baby, or doing something in the house for baby.

And I thought I didn’t mind. Like I knew postpartum could be very mentally consuming. But I think it’s altering how I view people around me and it’s prodding at my relationship with my husband.

He spends most of his time making food for us, looking after our dogs, playing with the baby, ect. But he still has time for his hobby. Spends maybe an hour a night on it. Even adapted to using a bot for shopping for his hobby after a certain incident where we had to have a heart to heart after he left me home alone with the baby for hours during a busy workday (I work from home) to shop for his hobby.

And yet there’s like this little green eyed monster in me that rages every time I know he’s running off to start up the bot. Even though I’m the reason he does it this way.

We took a family trip last weekend to see his best friend and their kids and let them meet the baby. He brought the laptop. He’s always brought a laptop on trips and it’s never been a problem to me before. But one night we both woke up while the baby was still asleep, and he wandered out of the room. I tried to fall back asleep but couldn’t. So I went to the kitchen to try having something warm to drink to settle me. And he was there at the table running the bot from his laptop. I flipped out at him. But there really wasn’t reason to. It’s not like I needed help with the baby and he was ignoring me. He wasn’t avoiding our friends. He was just awake and unable to sleep and found something to do with his time. Yet my snap reaction was “why the hell would you do this on a family trip?”

I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s the less complete sleep from baby’s middle of the night feed? My brain being just consumed by baby? Maybe I’m not as over that shopping incident as I thought? But I’m just so annoyed at his hobby right now. The green eyed monster thinks “you could be using that time differently” but realistically to do what exactly??? Stare at our baby in the dark???

I spent probably an hour apologizing to him after I snapped. And he’s of course hurt and frustrated because I said some very mean things in the moment.

I don’t want to be this jealous, angry person. But I also don’t know how to find time for myself in this right now outside of basic hygiene. It’s like I’ve forgotten how to be myself, even if just for an hour.

Maybe I need a therapist.

Do men really enjoy fellatio?

Been together more than 10 years, but it's been a while since he even seemed remotely interested in me getting on my knees, or vice versa so to speak. I think it was once last year. Must be something I am doing wrong 🤔. Generally everything else in that department is great and we have two young kids with no extra support, so it's quite surprising we can't keep our hands off each other but may need to try new things. It's basically 2 positions each time with some foreplay.

Naps

How is everyone doing for naps?

Little one is 9 months old and will have 2 half hour naps and one solid 1 hour - 2 hour nap a day

Then settles for night around 9pm. Wakes for a feed around 3:30 then sleeps until 6-7
