What are your experiences with cervical checks? I’m 37+1 and not sure if I want a cervical check at my appointment later today. Are they uncomfortable/painful? I’m worried that either I’ll be dilated, (which will make me anxious that labor is going to start soon even though I know that’s not always true) or I won’t be dilated (which will make me anxious that my body isn’t getting ready even though I also know that isn’t true. I can’t decide if I want to know or not!

I didn’t get one at 37 weeks because I had no other signs of labor! I think I’ll get one at 38 though because I did have a few hours of consistent contractions and I want to know.

There a little uncomfortable and there is pressure but nothing extremely painful. I had my cervical check last week at 35+6 and I was almost 1cm. This is my second pregnancy. When I had cervical checks with my 1st they started them at 37 weeks and I was 4cm but i stayed at that all the way till the end when they induced me at 39+6. But no cervical checks aren’t painful they just have a little pressure, they will tell you that you may experience some bleeding after but not to worry unless it’s more than a regular period for you. You may be a little sore after but as time goes on and the more cervical checks they do the more you don’t notice the pressure or the soreness afterwards

Mine are painful because I have a high/tilted cervix, even during labor, mine never "dropped" just dilated.

I don't do them, and neither do my Midwife or OB, Unless in active labor and it's needed for something other than "just to know". It introduces bacteria. They also give absolutely zero indication of timing of labor/delivery, as you can be dilated for weeks, or be in full blown active labor and not dilated until shortly before.

i got one at 36 & 3, and girl it wasn’t painful at all! i was 2cm dilated and 70% effaced. getting another one this thursday at 37 & 3 to see if im any further!

I just got one on Saturday (37 w exactly) and I will say, it was pretty painful for me. Caveat: I went in to labor and delivery for intense ligaments pain and lightening crotch (so I may have just been sensitive to it)

There are a little uncomfortable for me if anything but everyone is different and I prefer to know what’s going on every step of the way!

I got one at 38 weeks and she was way in there but it didn’t hurt. I’d say uncomfortable

I got 2 of them during my first pregnancy and already had 1 with this baby. In my experience, they’ve never been painful or uncomfortable. I’ve also never had bleeding or cramping from them. But I’ve heard it can depend on how long your providers fingers are and if they have long nails. Cervical checks don’t feel intrusive to me, they ease my mind just knowing if I’m dilated or not even though it’s not a true indicator of anything significant. You can be 2-3cm dilated for a month and it wouldn’t really mean anything besides your body preparing for what’s to come. I personally like to know, but it’s entirely a preference thing.

It’s uncomfortable not painful but I always just wanna know so I get them. I usually have cramping and contractions for the rest of the day after I get one!

I’m 37+3 and haven’t done any yet. With no other signs or symptoms, my theory is there’s no point in knowing. And honestly, baby technically has 3more weeks, if you’re not displayed at all yet - that’s totally normal!! I have no intention of doing it unless I suspect labor is super close.
Even with my first, I was induced at 38+3, and started at 0 cm. He was born 8 hours later. Your body does what it needs to when it needs to!!
PS to add, I remember it being extremely uncomfortable when they did check for my last pregnancy. Not painful persay, but I remember being thankful I didn’t need to do it too many times!!

I totally agree. If if I hit my due date I may do one with a cervical sweep. But that is only because I'm really trying to avoid a pitocin based induction which is supposed to be a bit more more painful labor

I got one done. I had contractions before hand and they wanted to see if the contractions did anything. I was disappointed because the contractions hurt so bad and they fizzled out and they said I was maybe 1/2 cm dilated. That was is. They told me my body was ready to go into labor but my cervix isn’t ready. I personally didn’t find it painful just a little uncomfortable and maybe left me a little sore the next day. But that was it. No contractions or anything after

This is my first pregnancy and only got one a couple weeks ago at 37 weeks. I personally did not like the pressure and discomfort. I felt pretty awkward and was relieved when I was told it’s voluntary so I’m not doing any more unless a medical emergency.

I had my first one yesterday at 38 weeks and it was uncomfortable but not painful. But she did mention that the more dilated you are it is less painful versus if you aren’t at all. And I was 2 cm so 🤷🏻♀️
