As a partial deaf mum, I'm curious who uses makaton...if not, why not - no hate either qay

Ive started introducing it to my non-verbal son and learning it, same with nursery. He tries learning words but the words just dont come out properly and he babbles but just dada baba tutu and things like that and hes due a sleeping hearing test after not responding to much at a hearing test. We think hes partially deaf so its for that but if hes not ill most likely continue as he loves hand gestures

My daughter just started learning it at nursery ! I’m going to try too xx

I don’t know it and my children have been quite early speakers. I think it is an amazing skill though and would have learnt it if I thought it was needed.

Yes, we’ve been using it as soon as we found out our daughter was deaf. She’s got moderate hearing loss, so wears 2 hearing aids. We wanted to learn some communication for the times where she wasn’t wearing them. She uses most the signs well, understands them and is beginning to say them too. X

I use it occasionally at work as I work with people with special needs. I don’t use it with my children tho
