Hi,
I received my letter from the NHS about my upcoming 12 week scan. It says clearly that children cannot attend. Is this the same everywhere? I'm a little disappointed as I was hoping my three year old might be able to join the 20 week scan and enjoy the excitement and hopefully make a memory to treasure.
Can anyone shed any light on if this a postcode lottery thing and why children aren't allowed at scans? Thanks x

It’s not a postcode lottery thing whatever that means and children aren’t allowed to nhs scans but allowed at private ones x
By postcode lottery I meant there might be variation on the rules across the country

oh ok

if your going PAH in Harlow then no children allowed at all in the hospital scans, best check your actual hospital to be sure x

Think it’s pretty standard everywhere. You obv can’t look after a kid while you’re being scanned, the sonographer needs to concentrate and they have limited space in the rooms so therefore limit the number of people in there.
thank you. The room i was scanned in last timewas pretty tiny, unfortunately 😔

I’m at Warwick and it’s the same there. It’s essentially so that there’s no distractions for the sonographer because it’s a clinical setting, unlike a private scan. My friend booked a private scan so that her 4 year old could go along to that.

It’s the same everywhere for nhs scans, unfortunately as nice as it is for us to see the baby for them it’s about getting the information they need. Private scan places are more than happy to have multiple people in the room tho we took our 18 month old it was carnage so I can appreciate why they’re not allowed at nhs scans haha x
Thanks ladies! That's helpful to know it's consistent throughout the UK x

It’s just an NHS thing, private scans allow it. As others have said it’s so there’s no distractions, but also if there was unexpected news relating to the baby or mother then it would potentially be distressing for them to witness their parent being upset. x

I think it's pretty normal. It's a long scan so I wouldn't take my nearly 3 year old anyway: we booked a private 4d scan and took her to that. She loved it for about ten mins then asked to go home so I would dread to think what she would do in a 20
Week scan lol x

Just had a read through these comments - my 18 month old was allowed in my scan at 8 weeks at the John Radcliffe in Oxford and is allowed to my 12 week scan on Tuesday 🤔 I wonder why this is? 🩷
