Sorry if this a dumb question. My baby is due in September. A few of my friends who have had babies in the past couple years have told me that I absolutely don’t need a Moses basket because babies grow out of it in the first 3 months and that it’s better to hold them when you can.
But on the other hand, I have seen them with their babies when we go to the pub, visit them at their houses, or they come to ours. They basically can’t wait to pass the baby on to one of us so they could eat or go to the loo. It seems like a lot of hassle.
I’m thinking of getting a baby rocker down the line when baby’s a bit older, but I’m still undecided on the Moses basket. It does seem convenient when you’re hanging out downstairs in your house, or when you go to visit relatives, but I’m fully aware that they’ll grow out of it very quickly.
Any advice?

We couldn’t have been without ours. It sat on its stand in the living room during the day and the basket itself went into his next to me for bedtime because he felt more secure in the Moses basket as they are smaller. A lot of newborn babies don’t like next to me’s at first because they are too big. He slept like a dream in the basket. Babies sleep so much during the day you couldn’t possibly hold them ALL the time. The basket is good for putting them in whilst you do housework, eat and go to the loo ! Once our wee boy grew out of his I sold it on Facebook so it would get used again ☺️

We used ours heavily. Our baby didn’t like how big her next2me was and much preferred her moses. She was also in it more than 3 months 😂 after a while we placed the Moses into her next2me. Also great for transporting her from downstairs to upstairs without waking xx

I loved our Moses basket, we had it in the living room so when baby was napping he went in there, this taught him independent sleeping too. He hardly ever needs to be rocked to sleep because we hardly ever did it as an infant. We even had to get a second for the bedroom because he slept so much better in the Moses baskets than he did in his crib. I found it very useful

I used a moses basket for 4 months with both of mine (until they went into their own room). I had a stand upstairs and a stand downstairs so I only had to carry the basket up and down. Both of mine loved it and slept like a dream. My babies are a little on the smaller side, so I can see why some may outgrow by 3 months x

I have a basket for down stairs and a bedside crib for upstairs

I used a travel bassinet but definitely had to change to something else eventually

You've got to consider a bunch of factors. Where would you put the baby in the Moses basket when you're out and about? On the seat where it could fall off with the baby inside of it? On the floor? Meanwhile half the time the baby just wants to be held. You could consider a infant car seat stroller instead for outside the house. You get multiple uses out of it. For inside the house we have a rolling bassinet that gets moved around as we need to and can be used up to 20 lbs (8ish months). But it sounds like you have a multi-story house so maybe the most basket is the best choice when you have to move up and down stairs a lot. A pack and play might be another option that you would be able to move fairly easily and would be used very long time in comparison to a Moses basket. And a pack and play would be good for safe sleep.

I use my pram bassinet. Didn't see the point in getting a mosses basket when the bassinet is basically the same thing. I just leave my pram up in the lounge. Or I also have a snooze pod which I know are not recommended but I'm always with her when she's in it. X

You need somewhere to put baby downstairs while you pop to the loo or make a cup of tea.
That could be a Moses basket but it could be the pram carry cot, a travel cot, a soft playmat or even the sofa (not advised but most people have done it once or twice).
So no, you don't need a Moses basket but you probably need somewhere to pop baby sometimes.

I’m borrowing a Moses basket, to use when I am downstairs. I have a next 2 me for upstairs in my bedroom.
If I wasn’t borrowing a Moses basket, I was going to use the bassinet that comes with the pram.

They do grow out of them quickly but they're good to have so you can move it round the house but also my little boy wouldnt settle in his next to me crib as it was too big. Moses baskets provide a bit of comfort as they're smaller

You might be able to find a Moses basket for a good price on fb marketplace or sometimes in a good sale, a new Moses basket might not be that expensive
Thanks for the responses everyone, very helpful!! A few people suggested using the pram bassinet - unfortunately ours detaches, but doesn’t sit flat on the floor, so this isn’t an option. Thanks though! 😊

I didn’t have a Moses basket I just left my pram set up downstairs and a next to me in our room
90% of the time she only slept on me or on walks in the pram

We found ours amazing. It lasted a lot longer than 3 months. I loved that it was portable, and baby loved it!

Probably depends on the baby, mine would scream if she wasn’t being held so never used mine! Did use the pram bassinet a bit as tried to rock her to sleep in that sometimes. Good to have somewhere safe to put them if you need a moment though!

We use our pram cot but found it fits in to a wooden Moses basket stand (ours doesn’t sit flush to the floor either) we just picked up a stand off Facebook marketplace 🙂

I didn’t get one and regretted it. Baby napped in the carrycot during daytime. A Moses basket can be carried with you if you want to shower while baby is sleeping etc. If I have another baby I’ll get one. I had a next to me and found it useless, ended up cosleeping anyway. A Moses basket doesn’t last long but it’s helpful up in the fourth trimester which is the most intense anyway.

We used a Dockatot

We also used our pram bassinet and just had the whole pram in the living room, we have a cat so I didn’t really like him being on the floor (turns out cat was terrified of baby and went nowhere near him anyway 😅)

Mine didn't use it, I wish I got a next to me!

I used mine as a storage basket 😅 only lasted a month as a bed

No, you don't. I would highly recommend a mini crib on wheels. Now, that was helpful.

When baby was young we would put her in the moses basket in the kitchen whilst we ate. She hated her crib as it was so big for her so for the first three months she also slept in it. She is almost 6 months now and I still plonk her in it when I need to set up her playmat or answer the door. She is a little baby though! Well worth it.

Ours was held or in a bouncer. We used a bouncer more then probably recommended and he’s fine lol

2 babies and never had one, we used the pram bassinet (you don’t need to detach it, can keep it on the wheels in the house)
We also had the snuzpod 4 for nighttime sleep and we got the one that had the detachable bassinet so we could use that downstairs, same concept as a Moses but it’s bigger

The pram bassinet doesn't need to detach to be used. The baby can stay in it with the wheels attached 🤷♀️

exactly this!! We also had to use the Moses basket in the next to me. My daughter was so small, the next to me was huge for her.
It is also very convenient to have somewhere to place baby safely downstairs. My daughter didn’t like being put down for naps so I did hold her a lot but it was still very useful x

I got a second hand one of Facebook marketplace cost £10. I made sure was good quality when picked it up. Had barely been used. I just bought a new mattress.
Depends how much space you have aswell. Like others have said can use bassinet from pram to sleep in also.
I have a next to me crib (also 2nd
Second in the bedroom)

You can't predict your baby's personality before they come and they may be a baby who will not go down for naps in which case it's a waste of money. With my first baby we used the carrycot from the pram so I didn't have to pay extra for something else for him to nap in, him napping in this only lasted a couple of weeks though and then he would only contact nap. My second baby has refused to go down for any sleep since birth and so has only ever napped on me.

My first was a long baby and grew out of the Moses basket very quickly but we used it downstairs throughout the day and even layed her in it while we ate dinner, we only had 1 but we kept moving it upstairs and downstairs depending on where I wanted to be most. We had a bouncer as well that layed flat so we used that as well especially in the bathroom when I was having a shower when my husband was at work. We went away to visit my brother when she was 2 weeks old and we used the pram bassinet instead of taking the Moses basket

I used a bouncer that went flat down. She loved it and we had no issues

I’d also say like if you’re unsure and it’s not essential just leave it and if when the babe is here you decide you need one then you can get one! X
I don’t have that kind of space in my house and I don’t want to track mud from outside as we’ll be coming into autumn when he arrives
what brand was it out of interest?

Jolie dreamer it’s suitable from birth to 13kg. It’s kinda expensive but I got mine second hand from Facebook market place for £10

Another option is the snuzpod we got that as our next to me and the top is moveable so you can take it off and bring it down stairs with you (again got it from market place)
