advice (not opinions)🫶🏻

the UK guidelines state babies can move to their own room from 6months old. With our first, we waited until 6 months and as soon as he was 6 months, he was in his own room. We have a second baby who is 4 months now, and I’m really tempted to move him to his own room. I just wonder if he’d sleep better, he gets disturbed quite easily, he does so well sleeping in his room by himself during the day for naps, so I’m just wondering if anyone moved their child to their own room for night time sleep earlier than advised and how it went? x

Yes, I moved my little girl at around 4.5 months! We lived in a cute little bungalow at the time so she was always pretty close.
It actually helped with sleep as she was also disturbed easily! We had a camera style monitor on her and it was all fine 😊

Avatar

that’s great to know thanks so much!! we also have a camera monitor so we can keep an eye on him, i just think he’d sleep in later too as our nearly 4 year old is an early riser (since he turned 3😭) and i think he wakes baby when waking us at 5am! when our 3 year old had a sleepover at his grandparents first time since baby was born, baby slept until 6:30am for the first time ever and that was when we realised the baby is a better sleeper than the 3 year old but gets his sleep interrupted 😆xx

Avatar

Oh absolutely, he will hopefully sleep in a little longer for you! I feel your pain I’ve got an early riser too.. never later than 530 🫣

Hope it works out for you and the little ones ❤️

For SIDS prevention baby needs to be in the same room as you for all sleep (including naps) for at least 6 months, your breathing regulates theirs

Avatar

I moved both of mine into their own room before 6 months, they’re both great sleepers now. I started with their day time naps and then moved onto their night time sleep. I did have the owlet sock though so SIDS wasn’t as much of a worry for me!

My kids were in their own rooms from day 1

i only learnt about the *all* sleep thing after i had my second. when i had my first, all i was informed about was the sharing a room until 6 months. my first born always (aside from being brand new newborn) napped in his cot in his own room, but in the next2me in my room at nighttime. my second baby also follows this routine that i did with my first. this was one of the reasons why i didn’t ask for opinions, but rather advice from people who have actually done it ☺️ i’m aware of the risks of SIDS, but they say that cosleeping (which i’ve never done) can also cause SIDS, but so many mums do it and I think, in my opinion, a baby being in their empty cot in their room alone, is safer than cosleeping ☺️ x

Almost a year old and still with us haha

Avatar

idk how you do it! as soon as my first turned 6 months, he was straight in his own room 😭 it was nice being able to cough freely, talk, have the lamp on 🤣😭

Avatar

Followed guidelines but she slept through the night as soon as we moved her so I wish I did it sooner
Even though I missed her I enjoyed having the space back as our room isn’t large

Avatar

I just think for us we exposed him to noises and lights being turned on from birth so even if say I'm trying to find my water at night and have to turn on the bedroom light, he doesn't wake up. We even have watched movies with him asleep in the room and doesn't even stir haha

Avatar

that’s incredible! we always did loud noises etc, but for some reason night time sleep he just gets so easily disturbed, when he was fresh i would hoover and things and he’d be fine, but seems a lot more sensitive now, you’re so lucky!! x

Avatar

our room isn’t the biggest either, so having the next2me takes up a lot of space, and i said in a previous comment as well my 3 year old likes to wake up at 5am, which i believe subsequently wakes the baby, because the 3 year old has stayed at his grandparents house 3 times since we had the new baby, and every time he’s stayed elsewhere the baby wakes up at 6:30🤣

Avatar

From Canada, but our guidelines are the same. We moved our daughter from about 5.5 months for the same reason, because we realized we were keeping her awake with our noise.

Not sure if this counts as an unwanted opinion but I think it should be fine if you're comfortable with it and you feel like baby's ready? You've been through it once already so you kind of know what to expect. If you're still close by and can hear them crying it should be fine, I'd imagine.

Mine dont go into their own rooms until they are 1 year old

Avatar

I moved my son at 7 weeks and it was great! I live in a small house too and added a camera to his room.

Avatar

Won't move until she is at least 1,5 years 😊

Avatar

I didn’t do it but I understand why people want to. We were definitely disturbing my babies sleep toward the end of the 6 months. I’d say you are obviously aware of the guidelines so if it’s a decision you feel comfortable with then it’s entirely up to you

My baby is JUST transitioning at 10 months old. I wouldn't have ever done it before the 6 months, I wasn't ready tbh.

If she's sleeping in the room we just get undressed in the dark or by the torch on our phones and whisper. We don't have TV or anything in our room anyway.
My partner will watch something on his tablet or I might but we just keep it quiet.
I thought when I moved her she'd just sleep better because of the whole, maybe I'm disturbing her. All it means is now I get less sleep because I have to get out of bed to settle her and it's harder to get her back in to her own sleep space.
Might be ok when she's sleeping through the night but she's not at the moment so it just means I'm a lot more exhausted.

We managed 4 days and now I might try again when I'm more ready for less sleep but I'm in no rush. The 6 months thing is there for a reason and my partner lost a baby to SIDS at 5 months too, she was in her own room early, so there was no way he'd have done it even if I wanted to.

Avatar

As Taylor said above, I wouldn’t move personally before 6 months. They should also be in the same room as you when sleeping in the day at this point too xx

Avatar

Ours stayed in our room until 13 months… partly due to guidelines but also I missed him and the ease of
Just picking him up immediately if he stirred / was going through a sleep regression.
Personally I would never have done it before 6 months due to the SIDS increase likelihood but loads of my mum friends did it earlier, it’s really up to you just do some reading up on the medical research first so you are informed x

With my first, she reached the weight limit of the next2me at 4.5 months, due to the size of our room at the time, we didn't have the option of continuing in our room with a travel cot or small cot, etc. We did live in a flat and her room was the room between our living room and our bedroom so we were always in the next room and with a video monitor and breathing monitor. However, I personally wasn't ready for the move, would have preferred her in with us longer although she was fine and there were no issues with the transition.

Pregnant with 2nd baby currently and in a home that has a bit more space so I do plan of keeping this baby in with us for longer that 4.5 months, most likely beyond the 6 month mark!

Avatar

I co-slept till my son was 4.5/5 months old then moved him into his own room. Worked great for us.

Avatar

Both our boys were moved at around 4.5 months when they'd outgrown the moses basket. We slept better, they slept better. Our bedroom is right next to the baby bedroom and the beds are both by the doors so only maybe an extra 6 feet away from where I sleep.

Do what works for you, weigh up the pros and cons. The guidelines are obviously there for a reason but they are only guidelines!

Breastfeeding

Does it ever feel better? The actual feeding part of it is going really well and baby boy is growing so well. I’m struggling with how my boobs feel day to day - it’s really getting me down most days. The let downs make me feel awful and sounds silly but, I am also really missing not wearing a bra! 9 weeks postpartum and still getting fairly engorged, even with comfort pumping.

Any advice or just shared stories would help. I’m so torn between carrying on because I enjoy the feeding side of it or switching to formula.

Help! First time mum -

I have a 4 month old and now all of a sudden when he’s been asleep for 1hr30/2hrs he will wake up screaming (high pitched) I’ve tried winding him sometimes that helps, I’ve tried bicycle legs & bringing his knees up but that doesn’t seem to help but he brings his knees up himself sometimes but nothing happens. I’ve noticed since the 4 month mark he has started to struggle passing wind downwards! Any tips?

Big nursing bras!

I’m looking for recommendations for good nursing bras for bigger breasted ladies!

I’m currently in a 38H which seems to be the biggest size done at M&S (UK based mama here) and it’s snug and not as supportive as I’d like. When I look online, they mainly seem to be sized S, M, L, XL etc rather than bra sizes.

Any recommendations please?

Strange question

Hello. I would identify myself as asexual but yes i am married and i have a child. But now that ive had my baby. I think its solidified that im done having sex. I feel bad as my partner keeps asking me but i just dont want to. Any advice on what i can do? Any other asexual moms out there? I guess this could be confusing but im not huge on being bound by a label. I have just always felt it represented me best since highschool.
