My baby is 2 days old. Last night was so rough, he wanted to breastfeed NON STOP. I knew cluster feeding was coming but I didn’t expect him to want to be latched every 20-30 minutes all night. Is this normal for anyone else?
I’m thinking it’s so often because I’m not producing enough for him and he’s very hungry but I’m ready to cave and supplement for my mental health and his physical health 😩 any advice?

Girllll literally been going through the same thing!! However I have been doing bottle feeding and it seems like she wants a bottle as soon as she finishes one literally could be 15 min after. And sleeps for 30 min then is right back away.
I have not been able to produce a drop so I have been using formula even tho I planned on breast feeding 😔 we got this mama ! 🤞🏾

Hey, I’m in a really similar boat except just having a bit of trouble getting a good latch. Our second night with him was at the hospital and an angel nurse saw how tired and overwhelmed I was and suggested formula for that moment. I cried like crazy but he ate and was back to sleep in no time. One bottle gave me back some sleep and let me recover so I could continue feeding him after that.
Formula wasn’t my plan but i think it’s ok to have it as a backup when you’re about to teeter over the edge and baby needs to eat. You’re not failing him. As they say, fed is best!

Omg the appetites on these little ones is insane! I have nicknamed my son “piranha” after last night. My nipples will never recover 😩

thank you! I am thinking of getting some formula today just in case tonight pans out to be a similar situation! Plus my nipples are SO sore from him learning to latch so it’s getting pretty painful to feed him this often.
I hope we can get over this little hurdle and then have a successful BF journey but these first days are so rough. We got this!!

yup agreed on absolutely everything you just said. My nipples feel like they got attacked by razor blades😭 air them out as much as you can
I plan on going back to meet with my hospitals lactation consultants on Tuesday just to get some reassurance and tips to keep going and ensure it’s working for both me and baby. I wish the same for you! We got this!

My little man is about to be 3 weeks old and we definitely went through this but for me it only lasted a few days. It was absolute hell as I was running on no sleep and my nipples hurt so bad I would cry for the first few minutes every time. Since then we’ve both learned how to get a better latch, my nipples are healed (they heal pretty fast!) and he feeds like a champ going 3-4 hours in between most times. He does like to feed about every 1.5 to 2 hours in the evenings but from what I can tell it’s just the witching hour. Hang in there mama, you both will make it through!

At 2-3 days they go through a cluster feeding period since usually milk hasn't or is just about to come in and replace the colostrum. The reason is because it triggers your body to make milk and raise your supply enough for them. It also happens when they are going through growth spurts so it will happen again. It's hard and a lot of people give in to formula around these times because it's perceived to be an under supply issue but in reality it is very normal and their way of getting your body to up the supply. You got this if you want to keep breastfeeding!

Omg can so relate to that feeling! I literally screamed out loud today when he latched on my left side. That’s awesome you’re going to go meet with lactation! I think I’m going to do the same if this pain doesn’t subside a little by next week 😩

I’m glad to hear you were able to get it resolved in only a matter of weeks!! I hope my nipples heal that quickly. I’m airing them out and applying nipple butter and gel pads when it’s really rough. I hope my milk comes in soon so he doesn’t cluster feed as much and I can get some space between feeds to heal.

I hope my milk comes in soon because the pain from cluster feeding is getting to be too much. I don’t see any sores or cracks and he’s not smushing down my nipple so the only thing I can think of is the frequency is still just agitating my nipples a lot and causing the soreness. Who knows though, it could be a latch problem I’m not easily recognizing so next week I think I’ll go into the lactation group

My baby is 2 weeks old now and has cluster feed a few different times now. He has been wanting to feed for 20-30 minutes every 30 minutes and I know I’m producing enough because I also pump. We do a mixture of everything with feeding so when we do a formula or breastmilk bottle I pump. The first few days are a lot and it is hard but remember cluster feeding is normal and actually a good thing because it helps your body know what baby is needing and helps with your supply. My nipples are just now not hurting all the time but for the pain I had the metal covers that I put in the freezer to get cold and the nipple cream to help keep them from getting dry. I will say the cold helps more than anything else.

For all of you dealing with sore nipples, this product is pretty good. Nursicare Therapeutic Breast Pads... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09CS1QLTS?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I’ve heard good things about the silver cups! I need to order some!

thank you!

I swear they have helped me so much. I didn’t have them with my first and ended up stopping breastfeeding early and went to just pumping because I couldn’t stop my nipples from hurting then I quit pumping at 2 months. This time around my little guy is 2 weeks old and the pain stopped at like day 5 because of those silver cups. I use them off and on all day. I also put the nipple balm on the breast pads in the freezer as well for when we go places I can put the pads in my bra and that has helped a lot too plus it help if you don’t have the silver cups on hand.
