So i know they are still so young but does anyone have any recommendations for phonics resources/games? My mum has taught my daughter most of the letters of the alphabet but in relation to family members names, so if she see’s an ‘N’ she will say ‘that says Nanny’ etc. i want to try and teach her the phonic sounds before this beds in too deeply.

Hey, we have done similar with names. My little girl has foam letters in the bath she sticks on the wall so I did try and do a little with that e.g c-a-t little 3 letter words she is familiar with, she is totally clueless with sounding out words but it exposes her to the logic of it x

There is an account on TikTok called @teacherplayltd which is a teacher who sells phonics and starter packs! They are incredible! Mt daughters can now do all of the alphabet by sight and the phonetic sounds to over half by using these!
Also remember phonics shouldn’t really be taught in the same sequence as the alphabet! Start with A, S, M, D, I, T
As these will help to sound out the most words and this is how they are taught in school 🥰

Thank you for the suggestions 🥰

I’m a reception teacher and whilst knowing the sounds letters make is really useful the foundations are usually in:
-being able to rhyme and hear/find rhyming words.
- initial sounds.. so can you think of something that starts with ‘s’ - it is also really important to use the sound it makes (phoneme) rather than the letter name at the initial stages. You can find lots of videos on YouTube.
- oral blending - so I saw a c-a-t and then can they put the word together.
- nursery rhymes
SATPIN are usually the first 6 sounds taught in the uk.
But they still have two years before school so I wouldn’t rush with knowing the letters to the sound.
Story telling and being able to say what’s happening in a story.. how a character feels.. what might happen next etc is so vital to learning to read.
Good luck!

thanks annabelle, this is really useful! I hadn’t even thought about phonics until she started pointing letters out and telling me that they’re someones name, i just don’t want her to get confused with that and it be difficult for her to unlearn later x
