My 3 and half week old hasn't been sleeping well, wakes up after 20 or 30 mins regardless of contact nap or cot and cries wanting food every time she wakes. It's been 2 days like this and last night she slept about 3 hours in the night total! She's having enough dirty nappies and periods of being happy and content in between but not staying asleep. I've tried white noise and dark and all the other recommended things š the lack of sleep can't be good for either of us !

Hey it could be cluster feeding, how often is she feeding during the day? If breastfeeding itās likely sheās trying to boost your supply, try latching more frequently during the day as thereās a growth spurt around 4 weeks

Is she formula or breastfed? Just thinking if breastfed sounds a lot like cluster feeding to up supply which will settle but she will have some short phases of doing it as she has growth spurts. Also if formula or breastfed is she finishing her feeds or falling asleep feeding? If so she may just need a little foot tickle or cheek stroke to rouse her a bit to finish her feed. Unfortunately newborn sleep can be a very rough ride

Some babies, unfortunately, are allergic to sleep. You're not doing anything wrong. Just keep doing your best and don't be afraid to ask for help so you can get some rest.
My son didn't sleep more than 2hrs at a Time until about 6 months, then he slept 4hr stretches.
She's breastfeeding, I've had a bit of what I thought was cluster feeding before but she was still napping at that time, this time not napping so I'm more worried, especially with the 20- 30 Min naps for most of the day š« thank you all

If you are uk based get in touch with your health visitor, itās still quite possible that it is cluster feeding NG to boost your supply

Yes, agree with everyone above and I am here to tell you that when people say āthe only thing newborns do is feed and sleepā thatās BS. My baby would stay up for like 5 hours sometimes no matter what I did to try and get him to sleep.

Popping in to say that there is no scientific correlation between formula fed babies sleeping better than breastfed babies, so donāt let the lack of sleep put you off breastfeeding.
3 weeks is a notoriously tricky time, they become more alert which makes things much harder with sleep etc.
Will baby stay asleep on/with you? If so I would look at safe co sleeping/bed sharing guidelines (NHS or La Leche League) and get your sleep in that way!
Rest assured though, this is not forever and will pass soon. the newborn period is about survival, rope in your village and catch up on sleep where you can.
Youāve got this mama!
