Not talking

My daughter is 2 years and 3 months old and isn’t talking, she says a couple of odd words, she babbles away all day, nods/shakes her head, points, she understands everything you say to her and she follows directions - like if I ask her to sit down she will sit.
I recently spent sometime with some health visitors on a uni placement and mentioned it to them, they didn’t seem concerned about it, but I can’t help but worry?

She’s in nursery 3 days a week and the staff say all she does all day is babble away to herself, to them and to other children, but nothing you can actually make out.

Has or is anyone else experiencing this too??

I would look into an autism evaluation

My brother’s son is same age and has same story. Boys usually start talking late anyway but they took him to a speech therapist specialising in kids and they said nothing to worry about as he followed all instructions and interacted well.
My 2,5yo daughter started early but I noticed when she is with dad she makes more noises rather than words.
And I do encourage her responding in proper words so when she nods I’d say “you should say yes”. She also doesn’t respond to questions if her answer is a No, she’d just be silent so I keep telling her to respond yes or no and that it’s ok to say no.
Just hints of encouraging them to be more expressive. I feel like love for books really helped mine to learn more words.

Some kids just start later than others, give her time.

With nursery, they won’t really do anything about this until she’s 2.5 ( that’s how it is at my kids nursery anyway, unsure if that’s the same for everyone )
My 2 year old doesn’t speak but she also doesn’t point and do all those things your daughter does ( she has suspected autism ), we know she has autism though.

I’d ask the nursery for their opinion and if they can see anything else such as ( asd ) this is what I did with mine and they agree she also has traits , so that’s definitely a good place to start.

My son is also speech delayed ( not autistic ) and he could understand instructions, etc but it took him a long time to say more words ( he’s 3 now ) he had speech & language and they said he’s absolutely fine, just a bit slower than most children his age ! Xx

What I done to get my son talking more is, I kept asking questions, repeating a lot of stuff to him! ( I feel like repeating words was the best one )
Flash cards and one day he could just say more! He still doesn’t talk like children his age but he is saying so much now!

You should have an assessment by a speech pathologist. My son understood everything and followed instructions essentially communicating non verbally with us as he had limited words. He was not quite 2yrs and the assessment showed a severe speech delay. He was a Gestalt Language Learner. We simply changed the way we talked to him and he did speech therapy then before we knew it he was picking up words followed by sentences. Early intervention makes a huge difference.

My son was the same and was referred for speech therapy at his 2.5 year review, and then miraculously started speaking better 3 weeks later. He's 3 and 2 months now and can hold a full conversation 😊 he still mispronounces a few things but that's normal apparently. We got offered speech therapy in December but ended up turning it down as we didn't feel it was necessary.

I would get an evaluation on her doesnt mean anything is wrong

Sometimes they just take a little longer to engage in conversation! Doesn’t mean anything is automatically wrong. My little sister didn’t want to speak until she was three — she was taken to some speech pathologists but ultimately the consensus was that she understood everything and was simply taking her time. She’s 11 now and is a talkative, intelligent, kind and amazing kid! Everyone’s on their own timeline, comparison can sometimes make us worry, but if you feel their progress is otherwise not a cause for concern, just encourage them where you can! They’ll come around :) Now we can’t get her to stop chatting! Haha

Keep modelling language speech delay can be for various reasons. Son didn’t start talking till 2.5 x

I’m a speech language pathologist and would definitely recommend getting him in for an assessment! There can be several different reasons why a child is having difficulty acquiring words (or saying them clearly enough to be understood by familiar adults) which a licensed SLP can help identify and implement specific strategies for and early intervention is always recommended. I’m happy to send you some handouts with general early language strategies I give to the families I work with if that would be a helpful starting point! Just send me your email in a private message and I can pass those along ❤️

Vulnerable post: Is there such thing as the 4m+ trenches? I feel like I’m trying to stay afloat..

Next week I enter 4 months postpartum & my baby girl will hit, yet another milestone. As someone who struggles with anxiety, OCD and depression I somehow have done pretty well postpartum so far. I’ve always heard about the four month mark and as each week passed and I came closer to the four month mark, I still didn’t quite understand what these women were talking about as I didn’t genuinely feel like I was entering a rut. Well, next week is the week and this week has ROCKED me.

Maybe it’s because my husband left on Wednesday for 16 days, maybe it’s because I have officially hit a month of very little to no sleep, maybe it’s because I’m feeling extremely alone and isolated, who actually knows. Today as I was feeling joy of the memory of last September 27th when I found out I was pregnant, I simultaneously felt sadness, loneliness, anxiety, and failure. Failure that I am not doing a good job. Failure that I cannot make my baby happy or stay calm or get her to sleep. Failure that I’m not doing enough. I feel guilt when I put her down to try and get two seconds to myself or two seconds to eat food or two seconds to go to the bathroom for two seconds to try and manage an over flowing never-ending pile of laundry that’s accumulated from the last three months I spent away from home. I know I need to have grace for myself; every mother is told that. “Find grace for yourselves during a hard time”, but when my mind is racing and the baby is crying, grace is the last thing on my mind. Failure, guilt, sadness, anxiety, isolation, loneliness. Those are the words that come to mind.

Everyone talks about the newborn trenches. Personally, that wasn’t the “trenches” for me. Was it for you? People offer to help (maybe), phone calls, texts, gifts, deliveries, food all comes pouring in, babies sleep the most they will ever sleep besides to eat (yes that is more often), but it’s so different.

There is no more phone calls, no more texts, very to little support, no surprise check-ins or food drop offs, no offering to help watch the baby so you can try & feel human again, nothing. Most women go back to work, the partner has most likely been back at work, but for your baby everything has changed. They are more aware, more excited about the world, more excitement, are growing rapidly and hitting milestones quicker than you can blink. If anything, they need YOU, MOM more than ever. For mother’s these milestones come and go far too quickly, well before mom is even able to catch her breath or realize just how much time has passed, because she’s been trying to play catch-up with life and her mind since the very beginning.

So when all else fails, what are we doing mamas? Everyone tells you it takes a village to raise a baby, but no one’s willing to help build the village. So does anyone want to help build my village? This Mama could use a friend or two🥲🤍

Stains

Moms, what actually works for getting stains out of your kids’ clothes? 😅 I’m dealing with grease marks and all the random toddler stains. What products do you swear by, and do you pretreat, soak, or just throw everything in the wash?

Suicidal can anyone relate?

been depressed since I was in middle school now i’m 23 with a 2 year old drinking every day to stop from killing myself why does it never get better? Saw this story of woman who tried to drown her and her kids in a pool and honestly I completely understood. why keep a child in this miserable world. taking them out is saving them especially when no one would take care of them after you die anyways

Anyone who breastfed before… is it worth it?

Its much harder than I thought and I almost never get to sleep. Most people told me oh it gets easier but lots of mamas told me like ‘oh my 7 month old still feeds every 1.5 hours’ 😬

Where is the easy part in this? Really need some encouragement. We did formula for our oldest and right now it seems so appealing to share with my husband and get some sleep… 😭🙈
