Hi everyone 👋
My baby is 14 weeks old and I’m going back to work in April as we’re doing shared parental leave, so I’ve been trying to build a bit of a freezer stash. I’m pumping between feeds (not every feed, probably about twice a day), but I usually get less than an ounce each time 🙁 I tried pumping while baby is feeding too, but it’s still not a lot.
I’ve got a wearable pump - I now know it’s not ideal as a main pump, but I didn’t do enough research and can’t really afford a new one right now, so I just have to make it work!
At the moment I’ve got about 30 oz frozen, but I’m not sure how much to aim for before going back to work. I know milk output tends to be higher overnight, but my baby still wakes 3–4 times between 7 pm–7 am, so I can’t bring myself to stay up even later just to pump.
Baby feeds well, so I think I’m producing just enough for him - but how do I go about actually building a stash with such low output? Is what I’m pumping normal? And how much milk did you have saved before returning to work and pumping during the day?
Would love to hear what worked for others 💛 Thank you!

How long are you pumping for? Have you checked the flange is the best size for you? It can make a huge difference to output. Babies are much more efficient at clearing a boob, unless you get a hospital grade one. Did you know you can rent the medela hospital grade pump for £50 for a month- it could be a way to boost your supply efficiently without investing long term in a new breast pump! I don't think you need to pump overnight if you're already feeding overnight. I actually don't think milk output is higher overnight - from my experience it gets thicker throughout the day, but less volume output. Have you tried baby with any bottles to see how they get on with it/get an idea of how much they'll drink in a feed?

I found a silicone haakaa breastpump more effective, got more milk.with it than with the electric pump. Also more discreet to pump without the noise

You don't have a low output, you're making exactly the right amount that your baby needs which is why pumping on top of feeding isnt getting lots. They say that babies need 1-1.5oz for everyone hour you're going to be away from your baby. Which means you currently have enough for about 2 x 10 hour days. Once you are actually away from baby, you'll pump when they normally have their feed and should get a lot more milk. That the becomes your replacement for what you've used.
I'd keep doing the small amounts you're managing currently, as if you increase pumping whilst feeding you're also increasing your chances of oversupply which can lead to engorgement when away from bub.
What I would say, is that its hard to know how things will work out once youre back at work. Baby can always take a bottle of formula in the day if pumping becomes too difficult. It's also worth knowing that some babies will refuse bottles and then be attached like an octopus once you get home and try to cram in bigger feeds overnight.
