I visited our local preschool and looked at the school picture. There was only one black girl amongst 60 preschoolers. I got scared for my LO. How can I support my boy at best to make him feel that he belongs even though he does not look like anyone else.
A lot of my own anxieties came through. I also was the only mixed race girl in my village and dealt with micro agressions throughout my childhood and teenagers years. I ended up being hypervigilant and it took a lot of work to grow my self esteem and confidence even after completing my doctorate and having a nice job.
I’ll definitely do better in allowing him to express his feelings and put words on what he will for sure experience.
I just can’t control how people stereotype black children. The only things I can do it is controlling how I react and oh dear, I feel I got again so much work on my plate.
