Free-range parenting is a style that fosters independence, self-reliance, and resilience by allowing children age-appropriate freedom to explore, make decisions, and play without constant supervision. It prioritizes self-sufficient skill-building over high-risk fears, often allowing activities like walking to school alone, playing in parks unsupervised, or running errands.

Aren’t these the people the same people that unschool?

I’m not as extreme as this label suggests, I feel like extreme versions of this can border on neglect as the article says. But I’m 100% NOT a helicopter mom. Maybe a mild to moderate version of free range? It’s hard to label but I like the idea of giving him age-appropriate freedom & not hovering constantly with the “be careful!”s. He is only 3 so I can’t really give too much freedom yet haha, but as he’s older I feel like I’ll be more “lenient” than a lot of my peers with certain things.

mines more like child-led but adult supervised.
