Hi all.
My 4 year old son's nails and hair are in dire need of cutting, but every time we mention it to him, he has a breakdown at just the thought. He used to be really patient having his nails cut while watching a show on my phone, but now completely refuses to even let me hold his fingers out. Hair is even worse, as he just cries and cries when my husband cuts it. We took him to the hairdresser when he was younger, but he just moved around so much that she couldn't finish the cut!
Please could I get your thoughts and experiences on how to tackle this?

Can you use clippers? My 16 year old son has asd so Unfortunatly hair cuts do not get easier. We’ve done it in front of the tv with eardefenders before. Clean top to hand as he’s irritated by the hair. He likes the hair dryer to blow away the hair. The thing he hates about scissors is you have to pull the hair to cut so the sen hair dresser we have now is very careful when she does that. I did read about massaging the scalp first to desensitise it.
Nails we used to try and make it a choice so he got to choose which nail.

Can you do his nails whilst he is asleep?

I wouldn't worry about the hair. Plenty of little boys grow theirs at this age

Ok nails, can you do this when he’s asleep? Or would he be too light of a sleeper to do that?hair cut, what about taking him to a hairdressers and asking if he can sit in the chair and brush his hair and look around. Maybe do this 2-3 times and each time make a different approach and see if the hairdresser can brush his hair and talk to him to make him comfortable and then the next time try the brush and cut approach. Depending where you are there are SEN hairdressers that can help for nervous kids (doesn’t have to have SEN) but they can help calm them down to be able to cut x

My LB despises having his hair cut, but since I’ve been taking him to this lovely lady in a home salon she lets him walk around whilst she follows him to cut his hair, going really slowly and taking brakes when he gets aggy. She makes sure he’s her only client at the time as well which helps. Takes about 40 mins but he doesn’t cry once now :)

Have you tried silent clippers we have to use an electric nail file..it cuts out if it comes in contact with skin
