Hi all,
I am pregnant and will be moving from South to West Wales. This means I will likely need to change hospitals even though I really don’t want to. I will like be consultant led so will be the hospital in Carmathen. I have read terrible things about the care there so I am nervous. Has anyone have experience of it? Has anyone moved but kept their original hospital - is this even possible when there is so much travel involved?

Hey! I moved from pontypridd to carmarthen 9 years ago and best thing I ever did. I gave birth in glangwilli back in November. I have nothing bad to say but everyone is different. If you want to chat, send me a message :) xx

Hi, I moved from South Wales to West Wales in 2024 when pregnant with my son.
I was consultant led but at Withybush and I have to say they were so much better than back home. I had my C section at Glangwilli and the hospital and my experience from start to finish was amazing (even in the middle of a red weather warning!!)

Nearly everyone I know was born in Glangwili. I haven’t had an issue.

I also gave birth their back in October, was very sceptical myself but also had a very good experience. The support from the midwives post birth was absolutely amazing, and the lactation team! They do a few open evenings where you can look found the maternity facilities which definitely put me at ease. Keep an eye out on the Hywel dda Facebook page.

I had my first baby in Glangwili 9 years ago and didn’t have the best care but it also wasn’t terrible. A family member has had babies there in the last few years and again didn’t have a great experience, the second was slightly worse. Sadly a couple we know had a devastating experience at Glangwili in 2022. I’ve since moved away from south wales and had much better care having my second baby but the third was traumatic. As the above comment says, everyone is different and will experience different things. I do believe that sadly NHS care and services are lacking everywhere so I don’t think it’s hospital dependent. I now live in England and we have right to choose, where we can choose which hospital we choose to receive treatment etc at - I don’t know if wales has the same but maybe have a look? You can also discuss these concerns with your midwife

I think going for a walk around when they have one is the best option, everyone will have something negetive and positive to say but unless you know the full details try not to stress about it. I had my first in England and that was shocking, I’m consultant lead and will be having mine in glangwili ( c-section), ( I moved back 2 years ago) everyone of my friends have said nothing negetive about their experience so try not to stress about it.
Welcome to west wales 😊 where abouts are you moving to? Xx

I also gave birth their in November. I was originally under Bronglais in Aberystwyth but due to insulin for GD I had to transfer to Glangwili. I was gutted at the time but it went perfectly.
I preferred the ‘maternity’ care at Bronglais but I have NOTHING bad to say about my c section or aftercare at Glangwili - it went so smoothly. I have friends who gave birth around a similar time to me but at Bronglais and all have them have complaints.
The maternity unit at Glangwili has been referred so the consultant led birthing suit is pretty much brand new (the midwife led unit is older).
They did an open evening that I went along to to have a look and that settled my nerves, but they did say you could phone and ask if someone could show you around at any time, and if they’re quiet they’ll happily give you a tour. 🤗

Everyone who I know has had a good experience there. My only takeaway for myself is that I was there for ages waiting for an induction. I ended up being offered the option of going to Bronglais, which I did, because as it happens, baby's growth was tailing off a bit, and with their position, I don't think it would've kick started labour. So, in hindsight, I would've asked more questions or asked to just be sent home for comfort and be called back in when they actually had the space for me.
