Anyone else who’s got Gestational diabetes So my glucose levels have been high and I’ve now been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. It’s only my first week, and I assumed I’d be okay managing it through food alone. During the day my levels are usually fine unless I eat something really carb-heavy 🙈 (which has only happened once).
The issue is my fasting readings first thing in the morning — they’ve been over 5.2, usually around 5.3–5.5, and once even 6.0 Does anyone know how I might be able to manage this, or what the next step usually is? Would they likely put me on tablets?

I had exactly the same issue Mimi, all levels were fine throughout the day, the only issue i had was the fasting reading. I think mine went on for a week/ week and a half to see if it settled, as it didn't I was put onto Metformin 500mg 1 tablet twice a day. That wasn't working great either so it went up to two tablets twice a day and now I think I'm about to be put onto insulin as my fasting reading still isn't stable 😩
In all honesty I think I'd prefer insulin at the min as I've been experiencing a few of the side effects with Metformin but it's each to their own! X

This was exactly the case for me too and they've now put me on insulin (on Wednesday) after going up to the max of Metformin. It's pretty much something you can't control, unless you're waking up in the middle of the night for protein snacks?

I have the exact same issue! I was diagnosed with GD a week ago and my fasting readings are always high in the morning. I had to call the diabetes team and they have put me on insulin injections now. The injections aren’t that bad, I prefer them to tablets as I know about the side effects for metformin, and the injections don’t hurt at all. I’ve only been doing the injections for 3 days now, and my readings are still high, I reckon it takes time to get the dosage right, so I’ll need to call the team again.
It happens, they say it hormonal - nothing to do with your diet as you’re able to control it throughout the day. But it’s important to get under control as soon as possible
