This is probably a really silly question…. But how do you get your child into nursery? Do you just call up your local nursery’s and ask to look around? Can you choose? How far in advance do I need to start looking to get a space?

Hey, not a silly question. For most nurseries you want to call in advance, the younger the child; the quicker those spaces fill up. Infant areas are typically full and have waiting list, toddler and above usually have openings.
You call and do a tour and ask all the important questions. Bring your child too, see how they interact and respond to you and your child.
If you need help with what to ask, I work in one and can help.
You got this!

Waiting lists can often be a year, so depending when you want your child to start, you might need to pick before they’re born. We picked and reserved a place while I was still pregnant.

I think area dependent as well as age dependent. We were very lucky and managed to get a full time space for our 15 month old with 2 weeks notice at a Montessori Ofsted excellent nursery.
Call around, ask about wait lists and book some tours. Get a feel for the place and see how they’re set up.
