Scared of having another premature baby…

My first baby arrived at 33+1 weeks and spent 18 days in NICU, this was a very unusual and stressful start to parenthood which once he came home I became very unwell with postnatal depression. There was supposedly no reason for him arriving early. He’s now almost 1.5 years old and absolutely thriving 🩵

I’m now pregnant with our second baby and I’m SO scared of going through the same experience… and all I keep thinking is if we do have another premie that means my toddler will be at home and the new baby will be in hospital and I’ll just feel so torn that I can’t be with them both.

I really just want to hear if any other mums have had a similar experience and if there could be a chance this baby doesn’t come early just because our first did? I know I can never guarantee it but just a bit of peace of mind! 😭

Different experience but same fear. I had IUGR and uncontrollable diabetes which led to quite a traumatic third trimester and a cat 1 c section. We’re about to start trying again and am terrified to go through it again. I think talking to your midwife about the chances of a reoccurrence and making the best plans you can for if it happens, prepping your little boy that he may have a fun sleepover with family and video calls with mummy - and making it a positive thing will help. I think also taking it day-by-day and accepting there is a lot that is out of your control. Being high risk they will also monitor you closely so can pick up on anything that changes early. Best of luck x

My daughter came 4 weeks early so not as early as your little one but my second baby arrived 2 days before his due date. My daughter also came early for no reason x

Everyone are different and every pregnancy is different. I had my son at 32+5 and my waters broke at 30+1 and had to continue as long as I could without going into labour. I had my daughter last year. During pregnancy they classed me as high risk as they were unsure of what caused my waters to break and had cervical screening every 2 weeks for the first few months (it was nice to have that extra bit of care) i was taken off high risk which meant i could have a water birth as they could see no issues. I had my daughter bang on her due date with no issues. I don't want to say it wont happen but just because you have one prem doenst mean you will the 2nd time around. Its happened to me and 2 other mums I know and their other children have come late.
Hope that puts your mind at rest, honestly enjoy pregnancy and try not to stress xx
