Second hand baby stuff

I am curious what everyone thinks on second hand baby stuff like, car seat, push chair, cot etc. babies grow very fast, they grow out many things in just few months and kinda feel like it is a waste of money and not good for the environment. And also think as first time mum he/she is going to be my only child so I should get whatever is the best. On a dilemma šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

I’m a big fan of secondhand. Plus secondhand, you can get some nicer things that perhaps you couldn’t justify full price šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø we’ve had the most amazing highchair for my LG which brand new was something silly like Ā£600 but we paid Ā£50, and it’s done us 2.5 years, so absolutely got our moneys worth.
The only brand new things we got have been car seats and her cot (because grandparents wanted to buy it, I’d have been happy to get a second hand cot and a new mattress) or just gifts from people.

I have brought certain things second hand like clothes and some baby toys but I have brought everything else brand new, partly to be safe and ensure it’s been looked after but also as a I hope to have more children in the future so it seemed like a worthwhile investment.
I did buy a bouncer and a carrier second hand, but both of these were in extremely good, like new condition.

Car seat I wouldn’t risk unless you know the people you’re getting it from. I absolutely would buy other stuff second hand 😊 a little next to me / Moses basket for example they’re barely in it and they are usually in great condition too 🄰

I think it’s completely down to preference however I’ve seen second hand car seats are not recommend as it’s near impossible to tell if it’s been in an accident or has structural damage and with cots a new mattress is recommended other than those everything else can be cleaned or washed no harm in saving money where you can

Second hand stuff is live! The only thing I would by new is car seat as we never know how it has been used and if it has been in an accident or not

Basically everything we got for our daughter was second hand. I was under the impression why pay triple for something that is only for a small amount of time.
We got an amazing second hand pram, bedside cot, play mat, toys, and endless clothes from either vinted of local charity shops. I’m very happy with it all. and it’s easy to clean too. 100% I would recommend. We bought a fresh mattress for the cot but it never got used as we ended up cosleeping 🤣 and she still gets a few brand new clothes but honestly she’s in them for like two months max so it’s so wasteful but I can’t resist if something is cute. i genuinely saved thousands and that is so useful when you’re going on mat leave

The only thing I would never buy second hand is a car seat, like other people have said, there’s no way of knowing if it’s been in an accident. (Oh and mattresses, like Latoya mentioned too!)
Saying that, I bought a really nice play mat the other day for Ā£15 that cost over Ā£100 new and realised when I got home that it stunk so bad and was full of dog hair🄓 I have since put it through the wash 3 times with fabric steriliser and it’s absolutely fine but yeah!!x

I'd never get a car seat second hand, or a mattress. But clothes etc sure thing - and toys that can be washed/sterilised. Most of my son's stuff is second hand in terms of clothing! They grow so fast that I don't see the point of spending Ā£10 on one outfit when I can spend the same and get 5 šŸ˜‚

Second hand for us has been an amazing way to save money, environmental impact and help other mums get a bit of money back! As others have said we’ll be buying the car seat new (as per NHS guidance) but spending Ā£150 on an excellent quality pram vs Ā£900 new seems a no-brainer. Same for baby clothes, for something they’re going to wear for such a short time, it’s been great to buy bundles, save money and not have to worry about contributing to environmental wastage too

I got lots of 2nd hand clothes (really they were new, even with label, but bought off vinted for 40% of the original price). I think it's fine for everything except car seat and maybe pram for safety, and bed mattress, sheets, dummies for hygiene

I get a majority of our baby clothes and even my husband and I's clothes off of Vinted. I also have bought prams 2nd hand and cots/cribs. However when I get a crib, I dispose of the mattress and buy one new. I do the same with Moses baskets, I replace the mattress with a new one. But on Vinted I have bought brand new packs of baby vests and baby grows for £1 and got 5 new ones for that price

Car seat I would never get second hand, I always replace mattresses on Moses basket/cot/pram bassinet when I’ve got them second hand too just for cleanliness & safety. I get everything second hand pretty much!!

Injections

My baby had his injections on Friday and since then he has been feeding less at night, he used to take a 120ml bottle no problem but now during the night he only takes about 80, he drinks 120 in the day per feed but it does take longer than it used to, should I be worried? He’s having wet nappies no problem.

Toddler suddenly scared of room and waking during the night

My little girl will be 3 in July and suddenly night times have become an absolute battle. I can get her to go to sleep okay, however, for a week now she has woken up in the middle of the night absolutely screaming saying that it’s scary and refusing to go back to sleep without me staying in her room with her (which is not comfortable at 34 weeks pregnant on a make shift floor bed out of sofa cushions!) has anyone else’s little one gone through the same thing and does anyone have any tips on what stopped the night wakes for them?

Hitting😢

How are we teaching our one year olds not to hit? My son just turned a year old on May 26th and he’s recently been hitting anytime he gets upset. I’ve tried telling him no, saying ow, removing him from me for a few minutes, nothing is helpingšŸ˜’šŸ˜’

Anyone else have an almost 3 month old that screams harshly for hours? Causes ruled out are colic and reflux. Doctor says infant dyschezia but symptoms do not happen during/before bowel movements and she passes stool without trying most of the time? Not sure if asking these things are allowed but im so stumped i dont know what to do. Thank you in advance.

Sleep (help!)

So - we haven’t been getting very much sleep. My baby who is 5 months today always slept really well, but recently it’s not been great. The longest stretch he will do is about three hours - otherwise he instantly wakes up as soon as we put him down in his crib. Last night we were up until about 3 am trying to get him down. I honestly don’t know what to do other than co sleep which isn’t my preferred option because I don’t sleep very well next to baby! Anyone else experienced this?

Struggles lying flat!!!

My six week old is sleeping well (for a newborn!) but really struggles with discomfort when put on his back. He arches his back and squirms a lot after feeds anyway, but is most comfortable in an upright / inclined position. Even after staying upright 20 mins (and we’ve tried lengthening this right up to an hour!) when lay down the back arching becomes significantly worse and he’s gulping and gasping until he gets so distressed and it escalates to wailing.

He can’t tolerate being on back more than 10 mins or so when awake either (pram walks, changing mat etc).

As soon as he’s put back in an upright position he’s fine and sleeping away again on me. It seems more than just comfort / contact needed, even co sleeping he won’t lie down next to me.

How on earth do I balance safe sleep guidelines, with making sure he’s getting sleep and then also ensuring I am able to rest?! It’s meant for weeks now my partner and I take turns having him on us almost 24hrs a day and I’m running off 3-4 hours sleep per day even though our baby is sleeping much much more than this but I have to stay awake as he’s on me / upright.

Help!!
