Am I the only one that thinks Nursery/ school closures are ridiculous and over the top. So now we cant even hope for hot weather as everything shuts down just like during winter. The children are probably cooler at school than most homes as most homes will be hotter! I hope my employer will understand why I now cant come in š„

Not all schools and nursery closing ?
Our daughter nursery isnāt closing for now

I think the reality of this is a bit more nuanced⦠Missing option that Iād choose is: āDepends how hot the actual school/nursery building is.ā A modern, air-conditioned building is very different from 30 children packed into a poorly ventilated classroom hitting 35°C - schools/nurseries shouldnāt close for a warm sunny day, but if classrooms are reaching unsafe temperatures and the building canāt keep children cool, they have a duty to act on that. Itās not about being soft or OTT, itās about safety and liability.

I work in a nursery and today we had 16 babies with no air con & our room was over 30 degrees.
Have you ever had to try and settle 16 boiling hot babiesā¦.?
Or the preschool room that had 30 kids and only a few windows they can open and no air conā¦.?
Atleast at home they can strip off, get in the paddling pool, keep cool.
I donāt think itās OTT at all!

I don't think it's over the top at all. My son often comes out of school all hot and sweaty and that's on a normal warm day, not when it's 35 degrees. The school doesn't have air-conditioning, and opening windows and doors isn't going to do anything when it's that hot. If the classrooms are too hot, the children would actually be better off at home where they can wear less clothing if they want/need to, can have a shower/bath to cool down, play in the paddling pool in the shade ect.
I also work in a SEND college with young people with the highest level of need. Seizures increase when it's too hot, behaviours increase because the young people don't understand why they're feeling so hot and can't cool down. We have so many wheelchair users with complex medical needs too, can you imagine being stuck in a wheelchair in a hot classroom all day?! At least at home parents can allow them time on their beds, or they can wear less clothing ect.
