• BREASTFEEDING BENCHES: seats in useful locations around the town specifically for breastfeeding mums: parks, shopping centres, down the street etc. i’m imagining curved benches with carefully placed decorations like trees or flowers to give privacy without isolation. you could have a pair of them in a yin & yang shape with a curved short wall in between to talk to another mum on the bench behind you without looking in at each other. no one should feel self conscious but if you feel awkward breastfeeding in front of someone but feel bad ditching them to feed your baby for 20 minutes this could help (eg male family members). also takes away having to look for feeding rooms or faffing with covers.
• MATERNITY LEAVE DISCOUNT CARD: like a blue light card or student card but for people on maternity leave. retailers could opt in to give you like 10% off your food shop or whatever.
• HEALTH & SUPPORT VISITORS: when the health visitor midwives come they also bring a cleaner to help with whatever task you just can’t get around to yet, eg washing bottles, laundry, hoovering, lasting as long as the visit. single mums or mums without much of a village get twice as long. i think this could go such a long way for mental health.
• GENERAL VIRAL TESTS: like covid tests but for any virus, to identify whether someone is carrying any viral disease before they come near your baby. available from any retailer like the covid kits were/are. takes away the second guessing from having family who have been around someone sick holding your baby.
