I get a lot of American content on my social media feeds so I'm not sure if this is something we even need to worry about in the UK, and I will bring it up when I have my discussion with the Obstetrics team but if I am having an elective C-section will it be possible for them to delay cutting the umbilical cord until it's white/finished pumping, or is that not possible with a C-section? If it is possible, do I need to specifically ask for it or is it normal here in the UK?

Hi, I'm planning on a c section soon as well! I understand that you need to ask and if they do it, they would do it up to a max limit of time which varies by hospital. This is to prevent infections / keeping you open for too long.

I'm in the US and the hospital I had my C-section at did delayed clamping by default. Unless there was a reason not to, they did it for all births.

I had a c section in the UK last October - I asked for delayed cord clamping and they were happy to do so!

They do delayed cord clamping in UK too :) I think they do a minute by default if I'm not wrong, but you can ask to do longer. I asked, but since I had placenta previa and they had to cut through the placenta to reach the baby I couldn't do it (because delaying meant either me or baby bleeding out 🥲)

I had delayed cord clamping even with my emergency cesarean. It was in my birth plan and I my team were amazing at accommodating a lot of my wishes even though it was an emergency. With an elective you will definitely be able to request this. Have a look online at some other things you can request e.g. screen pulled down when they bring your baby out. Google Gentle Cesarean

I had an emergency c section and they asked me if I wanted delayed cord clamping. I said yes as long as it was safe to do so as it was an emergency. So its 100% possible. It doesnt take long for the cord to go white
