My baby is nearly 6 weeks old and we had an appointment for his tongue tie at 4 weeks, we decided not to cut it.
Context-
He could not breastfeed at all, and lost a lot of weight in the first 3 days however we switched to bottles and he now gains weight brilliantly, some milk comes out the sides of his mouth but it’s never an insane amount and he drinks his bottle without any fuss.
He has a posterior tongue tie which the clinician said is very far back in his mouth. He scored 6/10 and 7/14 on the assessment.
They said to us that healing on a tongue tie this far back would be more difficult and it’s at a higher chance of bleeding after the division which obviously made us nervous. They said it was up to us, and we decided because he is gaining weight on his bottles that we wouldn’t cut it. But now I’m questioning my decision.
Will his posterior tongue tie cause troubles later on? I’ve been told it can affect weaning, speech. He is quite a fussy baby sometimes and now I’m like oh is this because of the tongue tie?
Has anyone not cut their babies tongue tie and they’ve been ok?
Subsequently has anyone had their babies tongue tie cut after the 6 week mark because of other issues they’ve run into?
Advice appreciated x

My baby had a tongue tie correction twice the one at a couple of months was over in seconds and baby was fine instantly after as you give a bottle or breast feed instantly to soothe them and it works. However the one at 6 months was horrendous i felt and had i known i would never have done it. I was told she was on the bordeline of when they will do it by. What i wasnt told is 6 months and over it has to be under general so i would have opted for that. Her feeding issues improved but It can grow back they said. Feeding issues have continued as shes 2 in a few weeks but she has a muscle condition and thats why. For most it is like a magical fix.

We went for a tongue tie assessment at 7 weeks and they didn’t say what kind it was - just that it was mild and would only advise to cut it for feeding
For context she was having trouble breast feeding and her weight started dropping but I went to a lactation consultant and got lots of advice
We were too scared to cut it so left it but now she’s gaining weight well and feeding is much better (she’s 11 weeks now so can’t comment on speech)
They did say if we change our mind we can cut it at an older age though

Hi, I was told the same thing by the hospital when I gave birth and on the second day she wouldn’t latch. However, I was told this by a lactation consultant without any proper examination. The consultant said she has tongue tie. At our one week check-up at a clinic, I mentioned the tongue tie to the specialist doctor and she rolled her eyes and said the hospital tends to scare parents. So I ended up not going to the recommended surgeon (which was recommenced by the lactation consultant originally) ans I havent done the tongue tie laser.
Honestly, my daughter feeds well from the bottles. She’s 4 months today. She does droll and spit up like every baby. Nothing seems concerning at this point. However, I haven’t done weaning yet to solids (waiting for when she’s 6 months old). Hopefully everything goes well then

We didn't correct, pretty similar to yours. Not only were we told it would it would be difficult and more bleeding, she said that she would need someone else to hold her mouth open while she did it as our LO wasn't having any of it. Also on formula so wasn't an issue. 2 years and 2 months, no problem with speech and saying 4/5 words clear sentences. 0 issues with weaning, she eats far more than most. We were also told that if it is a problem when she is older then a dentist can laser it which far easier, less intrusive and cauterise it so minimal bleeding would cost a few hundred. Always an option if it does affect anything later.

I had my daughters cut at 6 days old as it was a severe anterior tie and she lost 11% birth weight in 3 days as she could not latch to breastfeed and caused me to bleed and crack . It grew back without me knowing and ended up being lasered at 8 weeks but it was at the point where my daughter never relearned to latch without nipple shield . 9 month later we’re still using nipple shield and also pumping . She was extremely fussy up until 5 months . Solids helped . She was Always a bad sleeper . Bad reflux . Colic . Like all the things 🙂↕️ I often question was it all linked . Got sick up 6 times after each feed and In turn was always hungry and dropping percentiles . She’s super happy now and eats solids so well . Milk drips out the sides sometimes during feeds but there’s really no more I can do . She is on track socially and speech wise . She did bleed after the first cut also the whole think was expensive . I spent over €800 with tongue tie consultations and procedures osteopath
