Breastfeeding

Hi guys, It’s day 5 for us and I’m really struggling with this whole breastfeeding situation.

The latching, the constant having to get your breast out to feed, and feeling like my body is no longer really mine… I feel awful saying it, but right now I honestly just feel like a cow!

Then there’s the constant “be careful what you eat because you’re breastfeeding” comments from people, which are stressing me out even more. I’m already overthinking whether everything I eat is going to make baby gassy or uncomfortable.

I know we’re only 5 days in and everything is still so new, but does it get easier? Did anyone else feel like this at the beginning? And how much attention do you actually pay to what you eat while breastfeeding?

It’s so tough at the beginning but it does get easier, and a few months in you might love it.

Don’t worry about what you eat in terms of baby being gassy etc, just limit your caffeine intake and don’t drink alcohol.
Other than that just make sure you’re eating sufficient amounts at mealtimes and snacks packed full of vitamins and protein to keep you full as your body will be depleting in nutrients from making the milk. Stay hydrated! Electrolytes are great for that.

Yes it really does get easier! It can take a while but at 5 days it is all so new, you’re sore, exhausted and the baby cluster feeds like crazy. It’s so normal to feel like this, and very normal to feel like a cow! But remember you are not just your baby’s food source, you are also their main source of comfort. When they’re latched, they are in their ultimate happy safe place.

I personally paid barely any attention to what I was eating. I avoided getting drunk or having too much caffeine, but that’s about it. Just eat lots to keep your energy up and stay super hydrated.

Oh it gets easier. Right now your hormones are crashing and everything is so new and hard. You're doing great mama!!
Honestly, just keep an eye on how much caffeine you drink and no alcohol before feeding. I never watched what I ate. If you start to notice baby is extra fussy/ gassy then watch what you eat but don't worry about it if baby is fine. You just stay super hydrated.

I never pay much attention to foods I eat. I just try to stay hydrated.
4 months on and baby started pulling my top when she wants a feed and pretty much latching herself. Very easy and convenient. So so worth getting through hard days

Hey there. Aww sorry, Slow down mama it’s rough in beginning and baby is so small they need help to latch on nipple that’s bigger than them. So you’ll need to do the pinch and two finger method to hold the boob away and nipple towards baby shown in this video:

It gets easier, honestly! I've been where you are and thought I was going to give up. I was bleeding, crying, couldn't touch anything to my nipples, walked round the house getting half dressed and dreaded feeding time! It's going to take a few more weeks to get better. My advice: maybe go to a drop in clinic to fix the latch and buy silver cups. So easy to use and just wear them in a comfy (and pretty bralet) 😍 they will cover one breast while you feed on the other and the silver will heal nipple pain over time...https://amzn.eu/d/03FGzDuv

I’m breastfeeding and my diet is 90% biscuits. Anyone not currently feeding your baby isn’t entitled to an opinion.

Thank you guys! It’s really reassuring to hear that you’re not the only one and it does get easier. I have got the silver cups and they seem to work but I just need to be patient

It definitely gets easier ❤️

Is bub actually gassy? Colic? Like screaming for 2 hours at a time?

If not, tbh, you can eat whatever you want!

I cried through so many feeds in the beginning and found it so hard and so painful!

It did eventually click and I ended up having a great journey until I decided to stop at 11m. So glad I carried on!

I really didn’t change anything I ate whilst BF, it didn’t cross my mind! Aside from no alcohol. Sorry people have been saying this to you and making your worry!

I struggled a lot with latching and toured around 5 different support appointments/groups which was a huge help - especially nice to meet other mums there to get help too!
