My partner and I have 2 children together (aged 3 and 1). He barely contributes to our household financially, leaving me to bear the financial stress alone. I have taken out 3 loans within the 5 years of being with him to help us get by. After our first child was born he quit his job to start his own dj business š. So instead of working every day he now only works a few days a week at night and on occasion he does extra gigs for weddings, etc. On average he contributes $200-$300 each month. Mind you, daycare for 2 kids with subsidy is $950. We have rent, bills, debt, EVERYTHING. It's too much on my own and I'm drowning. He refuses to get an additional part time job, even a work from home position.
I don't want to break up our family but I've allowed him to ruin me financially. Now I can't even support myself and my kids. Am I a bad mom if I stay in this?

Not a bad mom at all. Are you paying for childcare whilst he is sat home not working?

1) bad moms donāt usually question if theyāre bad moms. The fact that youāre worried already speaks for itself imo
2) this sounds like financial abuse. Have you said all this to him/ considered couple therapy? :) either way I wish you the best. Iām sorry youāre going thru this

I wouldnāt say a bad mom, but youāre not being a good example for your kids (or yourself) by drowning yourself like this. Otherwise, theyāll think thatās normal. Youāre just with a loser, and bearing the costs of thatāliterally and figuratively.

If you partner cannot provide financially you have to ask yourself two questions:
a) Is he a net negative or positive for your household? If he is taking more than he gives, this needs to be addressed. Men & women have duties to each other in every relationship. Relationships should not be transactional, donāt think about keeping score of chores but how does he reciprocate in other ways?
b) if you can address it, is he willing to step up and do what it takes to at least even the playing field? Can you realistically go from doing 80% of everything down to 60% and then keep working at it? if he isnāt, thereās your answer. But Iād just like to add based on a previous comment, not everything is āabuseā some people are just bad with money or have poor planning skills and that can be improved with learning how to harness delayed gratification. Itās a maturity issue a lot of the time.
