Just found out today that I have gestational diabetes at 26 weeks and honestly, I felt very upset and cried a lot at first.
I know I have some risk factors — my dad has type 2 diabetes, there’s quite a strong history of diabetes in my family, and I have a higher BMI. I know these can increase the risk, so I’m trying not to blame myself, but it’s still been a shock.
My 2-hour glucose result was 8.9 mmol/L, and I was told the cut-off was 7.9, so I’ve now been diagnosed.
My blood pressure was fine and they checked baby’s heartbeat with the Doppler, which was 140 bpm, so thankfully that was reassuring.
I’m mainly worried about baby. I know gestational diabetes can increase the chance of baby being bigger and can cause things like low blood sugar after birth. I’ve also read that children of mums who had gestational diabetes can have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes later in life, which has made me worry even more.
Has anyone had gestational diabetes and had a bigger baby? How was your baby during pregnancy and after birth? Did your baby have low blood sugar after birth or need any extra monitoring?
Has anyone’s baby ever actually gone on to develop diabetes, or do you have children who are completely healthy after having GDM? I’d really love to hear your experiences because I’m feeling quite anxious about baby at the moment.
I’m also a pescatarian and quite a picky eater, and pregnancy has given me a huge craving for sugary foods, so I’m finding the transition quite difficult.
I’d really appreciate any advice on managing cravings, easy meal/snack ideas and how you adjusted to gestational diabetes without feeling completely deprived.
Would especially love to hear from anyone diagnosed around 26 weeks and how things went for you and your baby.

Has GD with my son, he was 8.12 at birth and passed all his sugar checks. I took insulin to help my fasting numbers as metformin didn’t agree with me.
Im now 22 wks and passed my test at 16 wks so wel see on the next one. I opted for elective c section last tome and will again this time

I was diagnosed late, around 34wk, but I know for sure that i had it for longer as a private scan technician told me the baby look quite big (i had the scan at 30wk. I ate a lot of "crap" (snacks, fast food, pasta, sweets),not knowing i had gd.
I actually didn't have massive cravings at all the entire pregnancy.
You can pretty much eat anything as long as you follow the "rules". More protein and fiber an less carbs.
Fave trick - have a salad before pasta ( i loved pasta), but ofc reduce the pasta portion by a bit.
I even tested if i could have sweets. I could, after a good protein rich meal.
I was very anxious bc of my late diagnosis. It didn't give me much time to understand properly the limits of what i could eat.
You can do that, but don't do it daily. It's ok to have a spike every now and then, just not constant bad readings.
I believe bc of my late diagnosis, Combined with our genes (we' re tall), our baby had 5kg at birth (11lb) so thank god we chose c section.
Had a 4D scan today and it was amazing! This is my 4th baby and I can honestly say it still amazes me! His efw is 1lb 12oz 😳🙈 and his head is very comfortable in my ribs whilst I get kicked repeatedly in my vagina 🤣

My partner, my son and I live with my in-laws (hopefully not for too much longer). I’m sooo stuck as to what to do for our son’s birthday in November. We can’t have a party at the house, my in-laws just aren’t those sort of people, plus they have quite a few dogs. We wouldn’t invite enough people to justify hiring somewhere so that’s also off the cards. Any ideas? Really want to do something special for his first birthday.

36+5 weeks today and I keep getting period type pains but there's no pattern or increasing intensity so I'm assuming they're not contractions. My bowels have also been a bit funny the last couple of days, looser than normal. I had nothing like this with my first baby and I'm also suffering with what I assume to be pelvic girdle pain. I have pain in my groin and I'm struggling to stand up, walk and go up and down stairs.
Is this what it's going to be like for the next 3 weeks? Or have people experienced this and labour has followed not long after?
