Rushing into a D&C?

No, that’s definitely fast. My OB won’t typically do ultrasounds until you’re approximately 10-12 weeks because dating is often inaccurate and you should DEFINITELY see a heartbeat by that point even if you’re a little off. 6 weeks is like the earliest possible point they can get a heartbeat, so if her calendar was even a little off that may not be a good scan.

They told my mother she lost my younger sister when she had an ultrasound around 8ish weeks many, many years ago. They said they may need to do a D&C, she was devastated, then she had another ultrasound a week later and ta-dah a healthy babygirl with a strong heartbeat. My sister was born 9 months later. Her dating was way off.

I’m not saying that’s definitely what’s happening here, but there is no harm in waiting a little longer to see. Also, the body often passes early term miscarriages on its own, so I don’t know why they’d rush to schedule a D&C if they think she was only 6 weeks?

Not sure what country you’re in, but where I am the earliest ultrasound is called a ‘dating ultrasound’ because it’s specifically to see how far along you are & it’s SO common for people to ovulate earlier/later than expected or just miscalculate their last period entirely. I feel like they should’ve waited another 7-10 days to do a follow up scan & confirm whether baby is growing/viable.

I’m in the Uk 🇬🇧 & you don’t have you’re first scan until 12weeks but can have a Early scan at 6 weeks with all my missed miscarriages they gave it a week to see if there was a heartbeat ..

I would highly suggest talking to her. You can approach it in a way that is sensitive and just explain your concerns. I would 100% encourage her to wait it out. Her body will release the baby naturally if she has indeed miscarried and if not, in a couple weeks she can be rechecked and if still no heartbeat and a D&C is the route she chooses, she can feel more confident moving forward with that.
