GDM- metformin managed, drop in centile?

My baby was measuring around 47% ie average before starting metformin, dropped to 27% after few weeks of metformin and then dropped to 21%.
At my 36w scan the drop is even more significant after my metformin was increased to 1g, baby’s now at 10% and we’re in for induction.

I’m wondering if this is because of metformin? I read and dr also said that metformin/GD could be cause of this but we can’t be sure.

All blood flows from placenta and umbilical cord are normal. I can’t fathom my head around such huge drop. One thing to note is I did start taking more protein and less carbs due to fear of potentially moving to insulin injections that I’d otherwise have to take in tummy.

Could that be the reason? Is anyone in similar boat or has had a small centile baby, that later caught up growth spurt once they’re born?

Need positive stories to calm my mama anxiety, because I feel like I caused this to my beautiful baby 😞

I don't know how much this will help but I don't have GD, no other health issues and haven't been taking Metformin and my baby dropped from 50th centile to 30 to 23.
My sister's babies were predicted as 8th and 12th centile and they both came out tall/around 7lbs each (so very, very average!)

It's really difficult for the sonographers to get accurate measurements the bigger the babies get. There was a post a few weeks ago with people sharing what they were predicted and what size the baby actually came out - most of the time the prediction is wrong!

Of course, it is possible you will have a small baby, but that's also ok, they should catch up within a few months.
But hopefully, knowing that predictions can't be inaccurate will help calm the anxiety a little ❤️

I have GD and I’m on 2g metformin a day, this didn’t happen to me so I don’t think that would be due to Metformin. I’ve also been on metformin 6months before pregnancy and continued throughout, with the dose increasing since the GD diagnosis, so I think you have nothing to worry about when it comes to taking it, but that’s just my experience. I did lose weight though since I got diagnosed with GD because I started to eat differently, in my case that didn’t show up in baby’s growth but those scans have such a huge margin of error that it’s difficult to say how big or small the baby really is! Hope all goes well for you 🤞☺️

Hi! I'm also a GDM mum. I was told this is a known thing that can happen on metformin and for me they said if the weight dropped on metformin they may consider stopping it and introducing insulin instead but that didn't happen. I understand that also, having GDM, whilst we all think of it causing big babies can for some (as happened with my first) cause the placenta to not work as well and result in a small baby.

However I don't think you should worry! We know that by having been diagnosed and monitored the outcomes for big and small babies is really good!
You have been doing amazing and everything in your power to control your GDM and you shouldn't feel like you have caused anything bad. You've made so much sacrifice for your little baby already!!

I think you need to get in touch with your diabetes midwife/nurse of the drop as they will want to know and hospital systems aren't always joined up very well (so the scanning dept may not have told them). Good luck!
