Low iron and elective c section?

Hi all
Has anyone been successful in getting an elective c section while also having low iron?
I’m only 11 weeks so have a long way to go yet but already have low iron (vegetarian and have always had low iron/ anaemia). I’m taking OTC supplements and have asked for a transfusion if it gets more severe (not approved yet, who knows). I can’t stomach the prescription iron.
But I’m worried I could be refused an elective c section because of this (due to the increased bleed risk). Has anyone managed and if so how? Did you just push for transfusions beforehand?

Yes I did! I've been anemic my entire life! My doctor put me on iron pills. Although I did have to get a blood transfusion after the c section!

Also the OTC made me sick and the prescription was fine

Have you tried the different variations of prescriptions meds. I was initially given one, I think it was ferrous fumarate but could be wrong, and it really messed with my stomach. I was changed to ferrous sulphate instead which I have tolerated with no significant side effects. May be worth exploring?

My iron was quite low after I had my son via unplanned csection 2 years ago. (For context it was a 4) and I didn’t have any issues during or after the C-section. They just gave me an iron transfusion before I left the hospital.

Currently pregnant again, and my iron is a 6 right now. Obviously will be getting the transfusion before hand this time, but otherwise nothing major has been said about no being able to have another csection because my iron is low.

Low iron is common in pregnancy, whether you’re vegetarian or not!

I had an elective c-section and have been anaemic my whole life really! But I did take the oral iron tablets daily and I had an iron infusion. I did lose quite a bit of blood but thankfully not classed as a haemorrhage, and they’re equipped for all scenarios just in case 🩷

I had a iron infusion today, and I also take iron pills plus my prenatals. This will be my 4th c section in November

I had low iron & in the end i needed an iron infusion at 5 months. The side effect I had a week later wasn't good but the infusion did help to bring my levels up.

Yes I did! I had to have a transfusion a week and a bit before my c section so that the c section could go ahead nicely without of any complication such as bleeding lots during the procedure. And helped with recovery.
My levels also held out until after the birth as well x

If your low in iron the doctor will offer you an iron infusion depending on your levels. I was and I also had iron tablets and an elective c section. All was fine and baby made a smooth entrance :)

yes! 7 weeks pp and had an elective c section. baby was perfect but i had to get two blood transfusions after lol

Yes. In my case, they gave me iron infusions before my C-sections. I had a total of four/five infusions, spaced out starting about four month before my C-section. Even with the infusions, I still had significant clotting and hemorrhaging after giving birth and ended up needing a blood transfusion.

Are you able to try a different brand that might be easier in your stomach like Vitron-C?

I’m also chronically anemic due to Crohn’s disease & am getting a c-section October 21st! I’m on liquid iron that my cardiologist suggested because it doesn’t cause constipation like many iron supplements do - and I will be getting an iron infusion on October 10th. I’m a little worried, but honestly if you keep up with the supplements, if needed get an infusion before your c-section and you should be all good to go!!

VBAC after 2 c sections

Hi everyone. My daughter is 13 months old and I have her via c section last August due to failure to progress. Everything else was fine apart from that. My son is 10 and I had a c section with him too. I want to start trying for another baby next year and would really love to hear if anyone had any positive stories about a vbac after 2 c sections x

Big baby

I’ve just had a growth scan at 36+3 and baby is currently weighing 8lbs 1oz.
I have a consultation appointment tomorrow to discuss further. My first was born at 39+3 and weighed 8lbs 3oz (I was induced) so I’m quite shocked at nearly 3 and a half weeks to go he’s so big. Did anyone else have something similar to this and how did it work out?

Morning C-section

Last time I was an afternoon elective C-S, went in for 2pm and baby born at 5pm. This time I have to be there for 7 30 am
What time did your c-s end up happening if you had a morning elective? I know it can vary but still curious if there's an average 🤔

Lip balm during labour?

Hey all. So many people have told me that I should definitely pack lip balm in my hospital bag because of the warmth and getting dehydrated.

But I've also read that you can't use most lip balms with gas and air because of the ingredients (usually petroleum jelly etc).

So does anybody have recommendations for safe lip balms to use, or is it a total no go?
