Buying toys at the store

My son expects us to buy him a toy every time we go to the store. Has anyone successfully broken this habit before? I told my husband that it would be a bad idea to start because it could become a problem as he gets older, and sure enough, here we are.

I’ve tried explaining that I’ll pick out a few toys and let him choose one, but that still ends in a meltdown. I’ve also tried going cold turkey, but he had such a huge meltdown that the lady in front of me even offered to let me go ahead of her at checkout.

Has anyone been able to break this habit? I’m open to suggestions on what worked for you. He’s 3½ years old.

Yes. I broke the habit at about 3. I told him we can’t buy toys every time and I stopped. I let him throw fits and explained it’s just not possible and that he doesn’t need more toys. I explained how toys lose their value if you have too many and that he needed to enjoy his and donate the ones he doesn’t before getting more. The real way to break the habit is to just stop. He had tantrums until he eventually didn’t. I’d say no and he’d say okay. Now it’s been almost a year and we hardly ever buy new toys. Now I say maybe for your birthday or Christmas, and he’ll get new toys for those occasions. He understands and is more excited for those holidays now. You’re in control not them. Also, I have told him on various occasions the truth, we can afford that right now.

I still get mine a toy when we go. I just tell her no to certain ones. She’s allowed to get one Barbie or a toy from the dollar area at target.

I would tell him that he can get one of these or he can get nothing. You’ll have a couple meltdowns but I personally would never judge a parent with a kiddo having a moment. Don’t worry what others think 🩷

If your little boy has a tantrum and you give in by buying him a toy, then he learns that a tantrum = a toy. I think you need to still take him to the toy store/section because not taking is just avoiding the problem. Keep going and keep being consistent with no toy. You will reinforce this negative behaviour (the tantrum) if you give in even just once when he has a meltdown. Focus on rewarding positive behaviour (walking around and leaving the store nicely). Maybe he could get a small amount of money when he visits the toy store and doesn’t have a tantrum. He can save up and buy a toy that he’s earned.

If he wants a toy then you can tell him to put it on his Xmas or birthday list. Take a picture in the shop and tell him that he can ask for it for Xmas or his birthday.

Talk to him before he enters the store. For example, we are going to look at the toys but not buy any. If you cannot look nicely then we will leave.

It sounds like you are a great mumma and doing your best!

How about if you let him take one of his toys out with him he might not feel the need to want a new one?

Bath times-how many times a week

So I need to ask how many times do I need to bathe my baby, I usually do it three times a week, I did her last night and will have a bath on Tuesday night, it's mainly a shower with mum as I can't access the bath at the moment but I am 100% safe with her in there but I found if I did it with her she sleeps better, she's five months old.
I usually strip her off, get into the shower and use an old mam bottle to pour water over her, wash her hair and body, gently and carefully, I use a muzzy to help hold her, then I dry her and put on lotion that for nights, like Nalas oil, which is amazing and smells divine. But should I be doing it more or not

My 1 year old freaking me out

On days when it's just us at home and I'm bathing him, I leave the bathroom door open and this lil boy looks right over my shoulder as if he's glancing at someone but no one but us be at home!!!! He's been doing it for months and I've convinced myself he's just looking around but he's look looks like someone/something catches his eye and I just pray in my head to be casting out any spirit that shouldn't be in this house. Pray for us - sincerely 🙏

3 under 4

Anyone had 3 kids under the age of 4? How do/did you manage??
I have a 3yr old, 18 month old and almost 4 week old. Partner went back to work this week and I feel like ive just struggled the whole time. 3yr old is mega defiant at the moment and just screams at me if I tell her off for something. 18 month old is very hit and miss with his naps at the moment. Like he's been up since 5.30am, tried putting him down for a nap earlier and he just screamed and screamed and screamed so aborted the nap, tried a 2nd time and he napped all of 10mins before awake and screaming again. 4 week old generally been fine but extra fussy the last couple of days and its hard to get her to sleep today 🤦‍♀️ i feel like a really shit mum at the moment. I can't get out with them as car is being fixed at the garage currently and the new pram ive ordered still hasnt arrived as its been on backorder. Ive also ordered a baby carrier to hopefully help. If anyone has any words of encouragement or any tips id be very grateful. I have cried so much this week to my partner because I feel like im failing 🙃

Milestones

Where is your little one with their milestones/ development?

My son is 6 months in 11 days and still hasn’t rolled over from back to tummy, he’s done tummy to back at most a couple of times but no matter what I do to help and encourage him to roll there is nothing he doesn’t seem bothered.

Don’t want to be one for comparing kids but when my daughter was at his age she was crawling, fully aware all kids develop differently and do things in their own time but being nearly 6 months and not bothered about rolling is this something to be concerned about??

First period

Hello! So I’m first time mum, 6 weeks 4 days pp and also exclusively breast feed. Is it normal that I haven’t had my first period yet? I know because I breast feed that it can be delayed but just wondering how long others waited before it arrived. Feel anxious about the first one 🙈
Thanks :)

Wake period

If I put my baby to sleep and they then wake up 20 mins later crying so I pick them up and and they sleep straight away, does the wake period restart from the minute I picked them up ?
