Hospital bag! Can you pack too much?

I worry I've packed too much. I don’t have anyone to bring me anything if I had to stay in, my other half doesn’t drive but will be taking me on a provisional license, so it would mean he would have to bring me things on the train and a bus journey as we live a 1hour away from hospital!

I just don’t want the worry of not having anything! (Bad anxiety)

My sister who has had 4 boys said no this is about right, that people next to her have packed a lot more even the kitchen sink lol

I took a small suitcase and carry bag, the same as you. I wanted to be prepared for staying in, I was home within 24 hours but I think its sensible to safe rather than stressing when bubs is born if you have to stay in and don’t have enough stuff x

Avatar

Aww thank you, I feel a little better now! I worry about everything and I don’t want that stress on top too! X

Avatar

I took a small back pack !

Avatar

I wished I packed more I ended up being there a week

Avatar

Better to have to much than too little I say!

Avatar

What the heck is in there? Best case scenario you are there one night. Hopefully, worst case scenario, you are there less than a week. 3 night gowns, one change of clothes and a toiletry bag is all you need. Couple baby footie pjs. The hospital provides everything else.

Avatar

Looks good to me! At antenatal classes we were told pack light, small bag for me, bag for baby, cos its tight space beside the bed etc so thats what i did! Ended up in for three days after a section, and leaving was like moving out! There was the original bags, another couple of small bags with clothes in and bits and bobs, couple of presents and of course the heavy car seat containing the baby! 😂 this time its gonna be one decent size suitcase that fits everything and no messing around!

Avatar

This is what I have been told they don’t provide everything and I’m hearing a lot with COVID you have to take your own towels and mug to drink from! I have a few sets of cloth for baby and coming home outfit, milk as I can’t breastfeed! X

Avatar

That’s my list

Avatar

Completely unrelated, but what I want to know is where you got that bag from. I Love it !! 😍

🤣

Avatar

I agree bags are nice!!

Avatar

I'm a big believer in the fact that you can never pack TOO much. My husband forgot stuff for his bag, so check whoever else's stuff too.

Avatar

What do you mean? Like a FaceTime call? X

Avatar

Check with your hospital as at mine they allow only one bag so you defo have too much

Avatar

My biggest tip is to leave a small bag at home in case you stay in longer than expected. Pack extras of everything so it can just be brough into you
Nappies
Vests
Babygros
Muslins
Jammys
Underwear

Avatar

To me that seems like way too much lol I brought a small backpack with me and that was it. Wallet, keys, water bottle, one change of clothes and an outfit for baby. Chap stick and tooth brushes. Phone charger. That was all I needed. You’ll be fine

Avatar

I had 2 carry on suitcases and a changing bag with my last, 1 carry on and a large handbag with first. Plus my own pillow both times. Hospital pillows suck.

My husband thought it was ridiculous the first time then he saw how much other women had with them and never mentioned it again.

Avatar

I packed a cabin size case and baby’s changing bag.. you rather have everything you need at hand then getting hubby to go back and forth - so I’m with you on that! 😅😄👌🏽

Avatar

Too much lol I packed a small bag and never even touched it!! You’re gonna be so busy with the baby

Avatar

The case has all baby bits in including 12 bottles of milk, the bag has mine in, I’m hoping for a water birth too so I have packed something to wear in pool if I don’t feel comfortable having nothing on!
Again UK Hospital don’t give you anything you have to take everything yourself! Also mine has medication in! I also don’t have the option of getting more items to me if I needed them!

Avatar

It’s ok your not the only one! I’m worrying I’m moving in, that’s what it feels like!!! X

Avatar

I would say whatever makes you feel comfortable go with... Labour is a scary but exciting time. I'm a second time mum and will be taking everything I had last time. Xxx

Avatar

Look about right to my ot sure if there any rules about bags but I had a travel on suitcase ( smallest size) for me and a weekend bag for the baby

Avatar

Oh and don't forget snacks I felt so hungry after having a baby and hospital shops are so expensive

Avatar

My #1 piece of advice: pack toilet paper. Hospital toilet paper is the equivalent of sand paper and your poor body will have been through enough. Trust me on this one. As for every thing else I recommend packing 2 sets of comfortable pjs, a going home outfit, toiletries, breath mints, and your own pillow and blanket. Pack snacks too.

Avatar

What snacks did you take!? X

Avatar

Nah I don’t think that’s too much. Take everything you think you will need and if you don’t use it then great. But like you said if you’re far away and have no one to bring anything, I’d be in a right mood if I forgot something that could potentially make me feel better post baby! We’re the opposite I live off the back of the hospital we’re delivering at so even if my partner had to walk home it would be a 10 minute round trip haha x

Avatar

I’ll be taking the same as this 🤗

Avatar

Looks about right. Always need a backup :) I stayed in hospital 5 days, I took a little less but had a backup bag at home in the car. If I needed it, hubby would bring it in but this was before covid. So, best to have everything & more with you.

Avatar

You can pack what you need because when you go home you will not want too have all that stuff with you. If you want.

Avatar

I had a whole suitcase for me/my husband, a bag for baby, and a book bag for things I might need during labor. Bring what you want. there is no rule to how much you can bring. I read a blog about a lady bring Christmas lights cause she wanted a calming atmosphere, but I also had a friend go to the hospital with just her phone, wallet, and car keys. It’s totally up to you. ☺️

Avatar

Yes I did not pack too much and didn’t need most of my stuffs

Avatar

Things I wish I would have packed but didnt: good snacks, face cleaning wipes, hand sanitizing wipes - I wasn't allowed to leave my bed after birth so I couldn't even use the toiletries I brought or wash my hands
Also your own pads and panties - I found the disposable underwear things terribly uncomfortable.
Better to have and not need than to need and not have
Good luck!! ❤

Avatar

I just had my baby in June and I packed about this of not more... however it was way too much stuff!!! Next time I'll be packing only one outfit for myself to go home in, phone charger, baby outfits/blanket, snacks of course, hair elastics, travel size shampoo conditioner and body wash!

Avatar

I was told to bring my own pillow and also towels for me and my partner, as hoping to be in the birthing pool, so I think I’ll definitely be needing a similar amount of luggage! Also, during COVID you won’t be allowed to go out and get anything you might need, if you unexpectedly have to stay longer.

Avatar

Especially given you can't have anyone bring you anything I think it's wise to take a bit.
I only packed a small amount because we lived 15 minutes from the hospital and my partner drove in and could duck out if need be.
I think it's smart to assume you'll be there for a few days and pack based on that just in case

Avatar

My little girl arrived 2 weeks ago. I worried about the same thing when I packed a medium size suitcase (and it was very full) but, I can honestly say it was the perfect amount. I ended up staying 4 days and was grateful I had everything I needed, especially since restrictions to visits would have made it difficult to get anything I may have forgotten about. The only thing I didn't use was my second pair of pyjamas since I had a complicated delivery and wasn't very mobile

Avatar

Just be aware that you will need to carry it all as partners get left at the door to the hospital.

Avatar

I packed for 2/3 nights and ended up staying 3/4 weeks so I’d definitely pack more than you need especially with the covid going on

Avatar

I didn't use a lot of what I packed

Avatar

Yes and I hated it😂😂

Avatar

That’s about right. Bring your favorite blanket with you too if you want! I had wished I brought mine, I was always so cold.

Avatar

Better to be over prepared than under :) I think the biggest thing is snacks lol.

Avatar

I packed enough for a week, I only ended up staying in for 4 nights but I'm glad I packed more than I needed

Avatar

Our little boy was born almost 4 months ago and we way over packed. I don’t think I used much of anything that we brought.

Avatar

Irrelevant but that bag is so cute!! I just ordered a bag from that brand

Avatar

Consider getting a pack of adult diapers. I think I had always discreet boutique or something. It was so nice to just have one thing to pull on and off instead of 3..the mesh underwear they give you plus the huge folded pad plus the big pad.

Avatar

Make sure u take your own pillow and a blanket I made the grave misake of not and regret it

Avatar

can you send me what you packed? so i know i got everything i’ll need!

Do active babies in the womb become active newborns?

I had my 40 week ultrasound yesterday (on my due date) and the doctor mentioned how active my baby is. Curious as to your experiences regarding if your baby was active in the womb, are they likely to be active when they’re newborn? 😊

Early Labour?

I’m 34 weeks today, since 3am I’ve been having irregular cramping which becomes quite intense and has caused me to vomit. I’ve also had diarrhoea. Could I be in early labour or could I just have a bad stomach? I feel generally well in myself

I’ve just been to my first growth scan as my bump was measuring small, for the lady to say that baby should be between 2pound 2ounces - 2pound 5ounces and my baby is measuring 2pound 15ounces which is above average, any one else has similar measurements?x
