Hospital Bag - Am I Packing Too Much??

I worked pretty hard to scour the internet for the most useful and practical hospital packing lists, and wrote mine up. Now that I'm doing the real physical packing, it looks like a ton of stuff!! Is the hospital staff going to make fun of me for carrying in multiple bags? Can anyone give me advice on some things they really thought they'd need and ended up being a waste of space?
I've got clothes for myself to wear in the hospital and come home in, clothes for my husband, snacks, comforts of home (diffuser, bluetooth speaker, my own pillow), my boppy, my breast pump, our camera, take home baby clothes...just to name most of the big stuff!
Would love advice from second time mom's, or other currently bag packing moms-to-be!

I would leave your pump at home. I was specifically told this by the hospital when I took my tour. Pumping typically isn’t recommended early on and if you do end up needed to pump for whatever reason, they have them at the hospital and they’re better anyways.

Avatar

Honestly less is more you truly don’t need all of that and especially with Covid they say to pack even less. With my first i overpacked and then realized what I actually need was just the essentials

Avatar

Just from my own experience, I packed WAY too much as a first timer. My list of things that I actually used ... face wipes (quick refresh), cozy jammies (I bought a new set for the hospital and it was so nice putting something pulled together on), slippers, undies (made such a difference after the first shower post birth), chapstick or aquaphor (I had my midwife offer to apply it for me as I was pushing 😂), body lotion, favourite snacks, going home outfit for you (comfy here, you aren’t putting jeans on) and babe and a blanket and hat. The hospital provides so much for you and baby. And when we were leaving, we had to juggle the baby in the car seat plus by 2 overflowing bags and it would have been so nice not having any of it to bring home, especially in all the excitement and anxiety of taking a 3 day old home for the first time! And a phone charger!

Avatar

All I used was clothes to bring baby home in! All I had her in in the hospital was a swaddle and a hat and maybe some little mitts but my daughter wouldn’t keep those on lol and then clothes for you and your partner and definitely snacks! But other than that unless you’re there for more than a day you won’t need very much of anything! Diapers and wipes of course too because the hospital does provide them but we ran out and had to use our own supply while we were there!

Avatar

Some of things I was grateful for was a pack of Depends. I know the hospital provides something similar but they suck! Bring your own so much more comfortable!

Avatar

Lol I packed my bag like, the day after my due date 😂

Pretty much just brought some lanolin (best choice, doubles as chapstick)
Clothes for me, one outfit for baby... some other things but that’s all I remember using haha

Phone and phone charger.

Avatar

I honestly only brought a small duffel bag and was totally fine. The hospital had literally everything I needed BUT I do have friends that pack like they’re moving in for a month and that’s what they’re comfortable with. Whatever you decide to bring is totally ok, I’m sure the nurses have seen more lol!

Avatar

I brought a suitcase, backpack and 2 carrier bags I wouldn’t worry😂😂(tbf I didn’t need most of it, but better to be safe than sorry!)

Avatar

Definitely over packed but we all do it! You won’t use half of what you bring lol it’s all good

Avatar

Make sure you bring an empty bag or two because the hospital will send you home with stuff.

Avatar

I brought two bags and ended up using barely any of it. Definitely leave your breast pump at home. If you need it, the hospital has ones for you to use

Avatar

You dont need that pillow thing

Avatar

I literally used chapstick ,phone charger, my clothes to go home in baby 3 outfits (poop explosions) and deodorant 😂 I massively overpacked and used practically none of it 😂

Avatar

I only packed one bag. Out of it I used nappies, wipes and one outfit for baby. I used toothbrush, shower gel and one outfit for after I had showered. That was it because we were discharged the same day.

Avatar

I only took makeup, toothbrush & mouth wash, hair ties, small shower supplies and 2 pairs of comfy clothes, charger & a come home outfit for the baby. I didn’t need anything extra, they gave me everything I needed/wanted.

Avatar

I had 2 nursing bras. An outfit to go home in. An extra tank top. Nipple cream, some snacks. 3 baby blankets, 3 onesies (2 newborn and 1 0-3mo) some baby socks. Phone charger. Shampoo and soap. Toothbrush. Hairbrush.

I just wore the hospital gowns for 3 days because they were constantly checking my stitches. I also wore the mesh undies they provided. I wish I brought my own pads though. I hated the ones they had. They were short, so I had to double up and overlap to cover the entire underwear

Avatar

You definitely don’t need that pillow

Avatar

I definitely over packed and we were sent home with so much I was kind of embarrassed by how much we had especially as we were leaving but no one even batted an eye. I really only used going home outfits for us both. My own fluffy socks, and my robe (I plan to bring at least 2 if I ever have another baby). I was wishing I brought the boppy pillow although I did just fine without it. Tooth brush, tooth paste, phone charger, deodorant. My own pillow. Other than that I didn’t need anything else. I wouldn’t bring your pump, they have one there and they have new parts for you that you get to keep (even some milk storage bottles). And snacks (which you said you packed) I didn’t bring any and I really regretted that.

Avatar

I brought very little since I was supposed to be delivering at a birthing center, so when i was sent to the hospital, i thought I would need more, but I was completely fine.

•change of clothes for me (I spent all of my time in the hospital gown and only changed just before I went home)
•one or two clothes for baby (including a hat)
•one or two receiving blankets
•nursing bra
•breast pads
•a few overnight pads (hospital should provide you with some, so you don't need a ton)
•nipple balm
•chapstick
•socks
•toiletries (unscented soap, oral hygiene things, deodorant, etc.) for yourself
•phone charger
•headphones (for music)
•newborn carseat (one that you can take in and out of the car)

You don't really have to bring a nursing pillow, the hospital should bring you tons of pillows if you ask, but you definitely can. Don't worry about bringing snacks or anything, the hospital should provide a meal almost immediately after you deliver or you'll have access to a vending machine :) God be with you.

Avatar

No Mama . Pack what you think is necessary . And makes you comfortable . And don’t forget Chap Stcik & a mini fan lol .

Avatar

Bring whatever comforts from home needed!

Avatar

I brought so much crap that was never used. I didn’t wear my own clothes, it was so much easier to just wear the hospital gowns. Our hospital gave me a lot of food. I was able to put things aside for snacks to have later. Didn’t need the snacks I brought.

Avatar

Yes you don’t need that much! Only one bag to include comfy clothes for 2 days for yourself, a going home outfit for baby, hygienic products, and your phone charger.

Avatar

A bit too much ... I have a hand luggage and my backpack where I have my maternity book and the normal things I have in my handbag such as tiny makeup, wallet, some snacks and drinks.

Avatar

I don't think you will need that pillow
I only took one bag and it fit my stuff the baby stuff and my bf stuff. We just had a separate bag for snacks
What I do regret not packing is a mini fan I got so hot

Avatar

You defiantly over packed lol but that’s okay... better to be over prepared then under prepared! You’ll realize on your way home you didn’t use most of what you brought with.
I went into unexpected early labor so I had seconds to throw everything together while running out the door. Is all I brought with was some random clothes, makeup, hair brush, body products and baby clothes. It was plenty!

Avatar

In ireland they just recommend 6 sleepsuits, 6 vests, going home outfit for u an baby, flip flops for shower, slippers, light dressing gown, few night dresses for breastfeeding during birth an after, snacks, pack of nappies, wipes an bepanthen an ur own mini toiletries, breast pads, towels for u an baby an cellular blankets, nothing for partner as ther not allowed in anyway just for labour an a bit afterwards, 🙂but pack watever u think ul use. I put the 3 days worth of baby clothes into ziploc bags for each day to make it easier for everything to b in that one bag for the days ur in ther

Avatar

You probably don’t need a breast pump, the hospital have ones you can use if you need to! But your milk takes a few days to come in so will only be colostrum at first x

Avatar

Yes lol

Avatar

I wouldn’t pack the speaker or the breast pump.

Rooms are small, anything you want to listen to you’ll be able to on your phone.
Depending on hospital policies you may not even be allowed the diffuser.
All of our hospitals are scent free.

Avatar

U don't need to pack breast pump x

Avatar

I would personally not take a diffuser bc some people have allergies to the oils. Some hospitals provide them with their own selection of oils to diffuse. I would leave the boppy in the car in case you need it as fell as the breast pump.

Avatar

I took my boppy but didn’t use it in hospital - i’d leave it til you get home. Also the amount of clothing you think you need for baby? Half it! I used about 4 things in the 4 nights I was in hospital, so if you’re in 2 you need hardly anything.

Avatar

No love ur enthusiasm for ur baby

Avatar

Bring a robe!! Only thing I regret not bringing. It’s great to have when you have visitors or walking around the hospital with the bassinet, etc. also nursing bra, there’s lots of people who’d just walk in while I was feeding.

Avatar

I packed just as much as this if not more🤷🏼‍♀️ I had twins and I knew they would be coming early. My husband and I were thankful to have everything I packed for us even though there was a couple items left unworn and unused, I still was at ease going into the hospital because I felt prepared.

Avatar

Yeah. I think the baby headrest is a bit much

Avatar

I think you’ve nailed it. My only suggestion is to bring slip on shoes if you haven’t packed them already, and a nursing bra or nursing tank top, and make sure you have a nice body wash because it feels luxurious after all your amazing work. You might not need all that stuff, but if it makes you feel comfortable, go for it.

Avatar

Flip flops and baby change bag/mat x

Avatar

I packed a carry on size suitcase because i also looked online at those lost and watched so many YouTube videos and literally didn’t use anything in it other than my socks my pjs and going home outfit and obviously my hair brush and toothbrush i used the baby outfit to go home that was it i personally wasted my time packing anything but those couple things

Avatar

Bring what you think you’ll need! Only thing I would suggest is to make sure the hospital allows multiple bags. The one I delivered at had a limit, and you couldn’t bring in pillows or blankets 😢

Avatar

I packed a full trolley (plane cabin sized) + a full shopping bag and the car seat 😂 only for baby and myself.
We stayed less than 24 hours, and only because we checked-in in the evening amd they wouldn’t discharge me in the middle of the night...
But better too much.
I had planned for 2-3 days.
I’d say that whatever you feel like having with you there, take it + basic travel items such as toiletries/ night dress & baby first wears and nappies etc...
Also if there is any food you really like to have...& remember the phone charger!! xx
Actually your picture looks good... That’s what I had minus the pillow.
I’d say the bf pillow is good to have but honestly you can manage without it.

Avatar

You won’t need the breast pump or anything having to do with your boobs really.. your milk supply won’t even be in. Won’t really need a sound machine or anything either they’ll be so much noise anyways and they’ll be sleeping good those first 1-2 days. The only stuff you’ll actually need is clothes, swaddle, eye mask, pillow for you, phone charger, snacks, and your essential toiletries. I wouldn’t over pack. The hospital actually provides you with a lot. You are paying for it so it’s take advantage of it!

Avatar

I think you probably aren’t going to use most of it, I definitely didn’t. But you could be different and it’s better to have it and not need it than the other way around.

I will make one recommendation, and that’s to have something that can play white noise after you have the baby. There is so much in and out all night long, my daughter did so much better once I stole her father’s phone in the middle of the night and played white noise for her.

Avatar

No no, you can never pack too much. BUT having siad that with my first i had a side room, so we'd loads of room. I was in a 8 person bay with my second and I was falling over things so see if you can fit it all into 2 bags (I'd about 4 with my second.... One was just food hahahhaha!!!)

Also can never pack too much because you never know what can happen in labour/after and how long you'll be in. My first has down syndrome (we knew beforehand) so I packed for weeks of nicu/scbu and we stayed overnight! I packed for 2 days(one night) with my second and bith mé and him became unwell in labour and he had antibiotics for a week.... Hubby was less than useless bringing in extra stuff for us....baby was fine but he brought me a thong(don't even know where he found it 😂🙄)

Avatar

Here in the UK we don’t get much provided so we have to pack everything but from what I gather from youtube videos I’ve watched is that in the US alot of stuff is provided by the hospital. You could call your hospital or ask at your next appointment to find out what’s provided.

Avatar

I packed 2 bags and used absolutely nothing. I wore the gown the provided and kept the baby in just a diaper with a blanket wrapped around him. I spent the whole time doing skin to skin and it was easier to do that in a robe than in a shirt. I used 1 outfit to take him home and I wore the same pants and sweater I wore in. I did use my Boppy because I had a c-section and it helped to keep him off my incision.

Avatar

I think you are, but it it ok it is part of the experience. The hospital will provide you with everything you need for your baby meaning diapers, wipes. He will just need clothes and maybe a blanket. And for you you need your basics nothing fancy. Try to not bring too much, it may overwhelm you

Avatar

Pack lots of underwear and maternity pads. This is what I packed lots of but still ran out. I didnt use half the outfits I packed for my little boy (I was told he was going to be big so packed 0-3M) 🤦‍♀️😂 the hospital should have breast pumps available for you to use. Take what you feel comfortable with 🙂 good luck x

Avatar

I was like that packed far 2 much. I ended up leaving most of my things in my mums car and when I needed things she would bring it.

Leaky nappy help

What nappies are you using to stop leaks?? We use pampers ultra dry size 5, and for the past few nights he has lashed through and we’ve had to completely change him during the night. Last night he leashed through twice!! He sleeps on his front and stays leaks through at the top of his leg where the tabs connect. Didn’t know whether to size up, he has a bit of a belly on him but he’s smack in middle of weight guidance so shouldn’t need too

Am I wrong?

I’ve been wanting to add more garden beds to my garden. Husband says “hey do you want to go to Home Depot to get that wood for the garden beds.” Cool I’m excited I’ve been wanting to get this done for awhile.

We get there and we’re picking out wood and I make 2 comments about how I don’t like how 2 pieces of wood look that he picked out. And he says if you’re going to be this picky then u can do this yourself.

I literally made 2 comments and mind you I’m the one paying for the wood.

I felt dismissed and like my opinion didn’t matter and if I wanted to have an opinion then I need to do it myself. Like what?

It was rude and not okay. Am I wrong? Am I overreacting?

He thinks it was fine that he said that.

5.30am wakeups 😫😴

My 15 week old has started waking up about 5.30am and is really hard to settle back down - it’s like he thinks it’s time to wake up for the day. He used to go to bed at 9pm and was up at 8am but now he goes to bed between 7.30-8pm as he’s knackered by then but waking up at 5.30am😴. Any advice to get him to sleep a little longer in the morning?! Even an extra hour would be lovely 🤣
