Waters breaking = More painful contractions?

So when I was pregnant I *considered* going without pain relief. I considered myself to have a relatively high pain threshold and just thought id see how I go, but would totally take gas & air or epidural if needed!

When it came to it, my waters broke at around 6am and about an hour later the contractions started. The first 30mins was pretty mild but then after that, holy s!*%!! They just went from 0-100 real quick and they were happening every 2-3mins (my labour ended up being 36hours long as I wasn’t dilating quick enough🥵🥵🥵).

I was shocked at how difficult I found it from the get go and almost IMMEDIATELY I wanted that damn epidural!! I just thought it would be quite gradual and that never seemed to have happened 😅 I think if the labour hadn’t have been so long it would have been better, but I wasn’t given pain relief for 24hours and I found the contractions murder!

Did anyone else have this experience? The MW told me that contractions are more painful when your waters break first so I’m curious to see anyone else had this experience??

*pic of Bub because of course it’s all totally worth it!

My mom told me that her contractions didn’t hurt until her water broke. Luckily we all came within 3 contractions after! 🤞 mine is the same!

Pretty much the exact same experience!! I didn’t know what to expect pain wise at all and assumed I could handle it with only nitrous but as soon as my water broke my pain became so bad I asked for the epidural as soon as I got to the hospital. I ended up in labor for a total of 34 hours and was glad I got it because man did I need the sleep

Avatar

Yes when they broke my water both times I was In labor shit got real lmao

Avatar

Even with the epidural… my water broke and I felt intense pressure that was super painful even though I didn’t “feel” contractions so I can’t even imagine how it’d feel without it 😅

Avatar

Omg! Yes! My waters broke before contractions! It was so painful in a couple of hours!! I begged for an epidural! And the worst part is you can’t move or do anything to lessen the pain!

Avatar

Haha omg this makes me soooo much better 😅😅 I was like, this isn’t what I signed up for!!!! Isn’t it meant to feel like this at the pushing part!?! 😂

Avatar

I was induced. My contractions came pretty quick and 2-3 mins apart but they were tolerable until about an hour later, they broke my water and then yup! They went to 100 real quick and I asked for the epidural! Lol

Avatar

I’m def not letting them break my water after these stories!

I had a long labour completely unmedicated. I stayed at home as long as I could I went into the hospital at 4 in the afternoon I laboured in the birthing pool from around 6 my waters broke at 9 and withing the hour I was pushing .. my contractions did intensify but tbh I was a couple days in then I was exhausted too haha my son was born at 10:24 🥰

My contractions hurt more after my water broke.

100%. Amniotic fluid provides a good amount of cushion during contractions. Once that cushion is gone shit gets real quick

Avatar

Omgsh yes my waters broke first then contractions and was fine at the begging but once I had that drip to make things happen quicker it was so bloody bad but I stuck to my guns and didn’t have the epidural but which I had have because the pain from been stitched up once he was out was worse then the contractions

Avatar

My water broke and I immediately had contractions 3 mins apart. Super painful from the beginning. Raced to the hospital and I was dilating so fast they gave me an epidural 2 hours in and baby was out 5 hours after my water broke.. I 100% do not regret the epidural. Best thing ever. Props to those who can do without it bc it honestly made my birthing experience easy and less stressful. My team was joking around with me and my husband in between pushes 😂 had I been in the same amount of pain before the epidural, no one would have had a fun time lol

Avatar

That sounds like my story, water broke first then within a few hours went from 0-100. I had to have a c section in the end but this theory could be true!

My water broke first with both my boys. The first, the pain was awful after a few hours. I got the epidural and had him ~6 hours later, napping til it was time to push.

My second, contractions still hadn’t started on their own 5 hours after water breaking so I was given a pitocin drip. Managed to go without epidural and he was born ~3 hours after starting pitocin. Kinda regret not getting an epidural with him but also feel like my healing postpartum was a lot easier because I didn’t have it.

My water broke at home and contractions started fairly quickly. I found them manageable with gas and air and didn’t need an epidural.

My contractions were so bad after my water broke

Avatar

All my pregnancies I had contractions first, my water didn’t break til I was close to fully dilated. It was already painful before my water broke and it gets worse afterwards…but contractions definitely got closer and faster after water breaks.

My 3rd was like that I had only mild tightenings all day nothing to stop me doing what I was doing but then about 11pm that night my waters literally just popped and instantly the contractions were agony! And they came so fast, however luckily in my case the Labour was only 3 hours long, I think if it had been any longer I would have transferred to hospital for stronger drugs

Avatar

My water broke first and contractions started about 3 hours later, mild at first, and then intensified to a point of no return. Got to the hospital at 4 cm dilated screaming down the hallways give me the damn epidural!!!

Avatar

Yes I noticed as soon as my waters broke that my contractions were CRAZY! Much more painful

Avatar

My water broke 9pm on a Friday and the contractions started about 30 mins later.
I stayed at home for 24 hours before the pain was getting too much and then headed into hospital 10pm Sat night.
From about 10pm-2am it felt like my spine was being ripped out through my bumhole …. That’s the only way I can describe it 😂🤷🏼‍♀️.
Anyway, I ended up asking for an epidural at 9cm dilated, then he was finally out after 3 hours of pushing

cute baby

Yeah they say when the waters break it’s speeds up labour loads so will increase the pain as contractions come on stronger. Idk if it’s true I have nothing to compare it too but my waters went first before I was in labour and during labour I thought I was going to die the pain was that bad haha x

Avatar

My labour was 14 hours. My waters broke at 7am and he was born just after 9pm. I found my contractions started off mild and gradually got worse over the day. It took me awhile to get to 5cm and when I did that’s when the contractions were horrible. I had a home birth and my MW offered the gas but I found it zero help. 2.5 hours later I pushed my boy out. I think it really depends. Some people get the painful ones right away and some have it happen graduallly over time

My water broke at home at 1am and I still wasn't feeling contractions when I got to the hospital at 11am, I was 4cm dilated then. I didn't start to feel contractions until 4pm, and by then I had been hooked up to pitocin since about noon.

YEP! I was always told to sleep or go for a date or something during early labor. My water broke and then an hour later my contractions came on. They were 4 minutes apart right from The beginning and they were SO painful I couldn’t even talk!!! I wanted to do a natural at home birth and I ended up opting for an epidural after 8 hours. Scared me from unmedicated births for my next kids for sure 😂

Almost 4 weeks PP now.
My waters went first at 6.30am Friday morning and developed into slow natural labour over 36 hours as well with strong contractions. Once fully dilated by 12am on Sun morning i tried pushing her for 4 hours but wasnt getting any lower- did all the above half on no drugs and the rest on just gas and air.
Ended up having to have a C section where i then found out cord was too short and round her neck so was never going to be pushed out 🙈. She arrived at 5.12am Sun.

Pretty proud of myself though 😊

How long were you in labor after your water broke? I’m hoping I’m like my mom. My mom labored than had her water break. All her kids came three contractions later.

Do active babies in the womb become active newborns?

I had my 40 week ultrasound yesterday (on my due date) and the doctor mentioned how active my baby is. Curious as to your experiences regarding if your baby was active in the womb, are they likely to be active when they’re newborn? 😊

Early Labour?

I’m 34 weeks today, since 3am I’ve been having irregular cramping which becomes quite intense and has caused me to vomit. I’ve also had diarrhoea. Could I be in early labour or could I just have a bad stomach? I feel generally well in myself

7 w post c-section running

When is it ok to start running again? Health visitor advised to wait longer before running but did anyone start at 7 weeks and how?
I know I won't be running marathons any time soon and probably have to start back at a couch to 5k but when?! I'm getting restless legs! Advice please

I’ve just been to my first growth scan as my bump was measuring small, for the lady to say that baby should be between 2pound 2ounces - 2pound 5ounces and my baby is measuring 2pound 15ounces which is above average, any one else has similar measurements?x
