Postpartum advice for "padsicles"

I’m making "padsicles", but how many will I need?

I’m giving birth for the first time so I don't know how long the healing process takes.

I’m just putting witch hazel and aloe vera gel then throwing them in the freezer.

Good for you! I’d make a couple dozen. Better to have extra than not enough

Avatar

Nice, I never thought of this. I just bought the frida mom post part I’m kit for like 50 bucks. Has everything but the peri bottle.

Avatar

I ordered mine from Amazon too, it works upside down and has an extendable neck.
I know postpartum is going to suck but I’m also like excited to be prepared. If that makes sense

Avatar

Best thing I did made up about two packs before bubs arrived so glad I did as I ended up having a 3rd degree tear and episiotomy and many many stitches in surgery so these were a godsend I did those two aloe and witch hazel and also put geranium, lavender and frankincense. Wrapped them in foil and froze them. Then when I used them I stuck them to the inside of disposable underwear (depend real fit for women underwear) and was healing within the week! Good luck on your journey.

Wish I knew about all this stuff 13 and 11 years ago, especially when it came to peeing 😂😂 I'm going to use this thread for ideas now! So insightful!

Avatar

You can always make them as you go. Witch hazel is good too. I was bleeding for like two weeks. Not a lot but like having a period. The first couple days are the heaviest, the hospital has diapers and you can ask to take some home. Once the bleeding wasn’t too heavy I switched to pads.

Avatar

Idk what’s going on here. Let me understand. You are putting hazel and aloe and put them in the freezer because this help with the healing. Do you just grab one out the freezer and put it on or do you wait a second ?

Avatar

I’ll be 6 weeks PP in a few days, I STILL wish I had more! I used all of mine in about 2-3 weeks! The cooling sensation is amazing and my healing is taking longer than expected . . .

Avatar

I had an episiotomy and a tear and didn't need anything like this but better to be prepared and not need it!

Avatar

I never tore. I made like 20 padsickles but only used like 5, then just diapers until bleeding calmed enough to use pads. I did hemmorage at birth so bleed more for longer then normal.

Avatar

Hospital really provides everything and they give u supplies to take home if u ask what you need literally every single item. The frida mom however is very useful i loved the kit which came with witch hazel and worked amazing and the foam i added on top of the hazel. But for ice packs sure do your own and still even if u r not prepared trust me hospitals got all the supplies you need

Avatar

I didn't tear with my baby, but the cooling sensation is still a must! Just delivered yesterday and can't wait to get home to have my personal ice packs that were pre-made.

Avatar

How do you store these??

Avatar

I needed them for 3 days

Avatar

All I know is these saved my life postpartum. I had 2nd degree tears and could hardly sit. These babies were the only relief I had for those first few weeks!!

Avatar

Normally 2 weeks!

Earth Mama Organic Perineal Balm by Naturally Cooling Herbal Salve for Pregnancy and Postpartum Relief, 2 Fl Oz (Pack of 2), 4 Fl Oz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01G93J6MO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_QMSBGWRQYV07GZ1E8X3E

If you do run out of ice packs and don’t feel like making more, this balm is AMAZING. Much longer lasting icy cold feeling w/out any soggy melting!

Avatar

Made enough to stuff a freezer bag, ended up not even using them. Hospital gave me something similar and some spray. Preferred the spray for cooling.

Avatar

For the hospital I wouldn’t take any they will provide some for you even though they are big and bulky they work great. And for when you get home I wouldn’t have too
Many stocked in the freezer at one time . I always made 5 or so and once I got down to using my last one I would restock the five and repeat that same process .

Avatar

The spray they give you is great make sure to take two home from the hospital.

Avatar

I had stitches with both mine and couldn’t wear this type of pad (with textured holes) for the first few weeks- pulled on the stitches when I moved. I found the really old school plain cotton thick really big pads much better and my midwife(UK) showed me how to double them up which was really blooming helpful

Avatar

Img this is a thing???? I need to remember this

Avatar

I had a 3rd degree tear and I just used the little spray bottle they give you with warm water. Worked like a charm. There are massages you can do 3-4 weeks prior to birth to help with tearing, Im planning on doing that this time, hopefully it works 😅

Avatar

I bought this.. Honestly, best thing ever!
I was cut & tore on top of that and had forceps etc and I used this and instantly felt like my fangena was so soothed. So easy to carry around with you too.

AMAZING STUFF!

Avatar

I made 10 but I had a c section and didn’t use them . Don’t make too much at once

Avatar

I used a whole packet and mainly used for the first few days - a week.

Avatar

See if you can get urine-alkalizer from the pharmacy, I used it after giving birth and it was an absolute life safer- it neutralises the acid in your urine and takes away the stingy sensation, in case you tear..

Avatar

Check the gel youre putting on. A lot of aloe gel doesn’t actually have aloe and can have negative effects

Avatar

Iv never seen this but I didn’t need any aloe Vera or ice packs or anything.. so I’d say don’t make loads

Avatar

I had a second degree tear and a few stitches and felt completely normal. Didn't know this was a thing!

Avatar

Spritz for bitz was a life saver for me! It’s pricey but well worth the money, I made up a pack of pads like this but to be honest only used a few x

Avatar

I used the exact same pads as you and ended up having to throw away a bunch because the folds froze together and ended up ripping when i went to use them. Recommend putting them in the fridge not freezer. Still feels great!

Avatar

I used 4-6 a day for about 3 weeks. Start off with 15. If you like them, takes only half an hour to make a new batch. :)

Avatar

They usually give you the ones that turn into ice at the hospital and you can ask for more

Avatar

Frida mom makes ice pack pads that were the best, I combined them with adult diapers, fridamom perineal healing foam and dermaplast. 12/10 recommend. I also love they’re perry bottle. (Use it while peeing so subdue the burn as well as after to) 15/10 recommend

Avatar

I’ve never seen anything like this as I’m a first time mum I only had a little tear but I’ve just been sitting in hot baths with dettol

Avatar

I literally just used witch hazel gel on mine or soaked them in distilled witch hazel just before I put the pad on. So so soothing no need to chill before.
Epsom salt and lavender oil bath is great too!

Avatar

I used a bunch, like, 50 or so 🤣🤣, 4-6 per day

Avatar

I used the large pads with the Tucks pads on them for about a week, changing every few hours based on how heavy of bleeding I was having. I used to keep the container in the fridge lol.

The peri bottle is also going to be your best friend, mama Frida has one with a nice spray head that looks more user friendly. Sold at target 🙂

Avatar

All the Frida mom postpartum products were a life savor for me. I tore in 2 places and used the ice packs for a few weeks for sure. I made a concoction that worked wonders. The Frida mom diaper,Frida ice pack on top, then 4-5 tucks over lapping in a line, dermoplast sprayed on top of the tucks, then the Frida peri foam spray on top. I could not go without any of it. Also, the Frida mom peri bottle is superior and a must have.

Avatar

I used pads without the fold so it wouldn't freeze together. I ended up using these every hour (maybe too much) it helped me and since I made them myself why not use more :) I did buy the Frida brand ones and would not recommend they are so bulky and didn't last as long as the homemade. Waste of money. I made mine with aloe and witch hazel. I highly recommend the Frida Peri Bottle and bring that to the hospital for use.

Avatar

Honestly for me The peri bottle was a complete lifesaver its amazing ! When i was about to give birth everyone told me the padsicles weren’t necessary honestly they give you everything you need in the hospital ☺️

Avatar

Tbf I just bathed in Dettol antiseptic 😂

Avatar

Nice job but I didn't use anything just disposable undies - no ice or peri bottle and I was fine however I didn't have stitches so not sure how different that is.

Avatar

The best way to avoid tearing is to not push on your back and only push when you feel the urge (not coached pushing).

Avatar

I really really loved my frida mom peri bottle and the witch hazel liners they have omg the best fresh cool feeling down there they work better then the tucks brand, I would but then off Amazon, I notice they where wat different then the ones I bought at target and I suggest get a “donut” to sit on in case you tear down there

Avatar

I only changed mine when I went pee or when I felt like I was leaking a ton of blood. I only used them for 4 days after and I didn’t drink a ton of water in the hospital so I probably peed like 2-4 times a day.. but I also didn’t make any.. I used the ones they give you in the hospital ( which are freaking amazing) I ended up putting most in my bag and then asking for more so I could just keep taking more in my bag. ( take everything they give you!! You are paying for it!)
But those, and the numbing spray they give are saints.
Hope this helps!

Avatar

Thanks for posting this!!! What a great idea I’m definitely going to use this

Avatar

I made like 30 and loved using them. It’s a treat for your Yoni!

Avatar

I found my tear took longer to heal as I was doing this and it was keeping it moist instead of letting it heal and dry out, I’d say get a soothing spray but try and just use dry pads and change frequently xx

Peace of mind please

I shot up at 4am last night and had the urge to check my little boy who sleeps in a cot next to our bed.
For the first time he has rolled over and was sleeping on his stomach, my heart dropped.
I was so scared that I picked him up to make sure he was okay and he was just sound asleep…

What are we supposed to do if they roll over in their sleep?! He’s almost 6 months old and I’m prettified of him rolling and it being a different outcome if I don’t wake up..

Just need some peace of mind that this is
okay?

Baby slept all night

Sorry, I just need to post this... my little boy is 12w5d and he slept through from 9:30-6am, woke for a feed and went back to sleep until 8:30!!! I can't believe it. I was obviously up every few hours checking on him and making sure he was ok, so I didn't get a full nights sleep 🤣 but I'm so pleased for him! 🎉🥳 (not a brag btw, I'm just so pleased and wanted to share)

Car seat

This car seat says 0-14 months. We bought it when my baby was around 5/6 months when he grew out of the old one and the lady who sold it to us in smyths toy shop said it can be used up until 4 I believe but why does the sticker on it say 0-14 months then? Does anyone e else have this seat the joie 360 spin?

🥲

Do any mums who breastfeed and co-sleep — especially once baby doesn’t really need night feeds — ever let their baby cry for a bit in the pram to fall asleep, just so you can have a few minutes to yourself?
A friend suggested this to me, but honestly it breaks my heart. I tried it once and it did work, but I’m not sure I could do it all the time. She’s a childcare teacher and said with sleep training you sometimes let them cry for up to 30 minutes… but I don’t know how people do it.
She also mentioned that a lot of mums here on the Gold Coast, Australia do it during the day when their baby’s tired — letting them fall asleep in the pram so they can have a coffee or catch up with friends without having to rush home for a nap.
I just feel like it might not be good for their nervous system and it doesn’t sit right with me… but then again, I’m also a first-time mum.

Would you consider a baby not talking at the age of 1 a developmental delay?

Based off a recent post, someone said that a child that doesn’t speak at the age of 1 is developmentally delayed.

Do you agree?

moving to cows milk

hi! my boy is one next week and changing to cows milk is really confusing me. he is fed to sleep sith formula three times a day, before his two naps and bedtime. how do i change to cows milk, especially if ideally the cows milk shouldn’t go in a bottle? i just so lost and quite dusted by the whole process. i have a munchkin miracle 360 cup and he can drink through a straw or open cup but before bed seems very disruptive to the routine
