Hi everyone! I came across a name that I can’t stop thinking about for a girl.
The name is Ptolemy, pronounced either TAL-uh-me or TOL-uh-me. It means warlike in Greek, and was also a name used for many Ancient Greco-Egyptian royalty.
What do you think? And I’m also wondering what possible nickname could be?
Thanks!

Personally I like rare names but when they are so different I wouldn’t have a clue how to pronounce it when I read it I don’t, I just think how difficult/annoying it’ll be as they get older and constantly get asked how to pronounce their name or how to spell it.
My name isn’t rare but I’ve always had people pronounce my name wrong, ask how to spell it etc and I could imagine a name like that it would be 100% worse and honestly it’s just annoying!

It’s rare, but not wild enough to cause that much confusion.
I think it’s really lovely, Tolly, Tilly and Emmi/Em are all nicknames that would be fairly natural to shorten from.
I personally, don’t think you’d have any problems with spelling long term, it’s generally known from a historical point of view so out in the world she should be fine.

As someone who is going to school for ancient history, I have a leg up in knowing how to say it, but other people will definitely have difficult pronouncing it if you’re outside of the origin country I think. However, I do think it’s a pretty name! I always tell people to name what you want because it’s your child and if you love it then go for it! But there will always be some hiccups to come with an unusual name. That being said the first person to be named Ptolemy I’m sure got a look or two as well haha. Some people will get upset they have to correct people and some people won’t. I think there has to be some expected patience with an unusual name!
Talley is a name I’ve come across a couple times as a nickname-first name for girls. That could be a cute NN! Or even Polly could be cute. Mimi maybe, Tolly instead of Tally. And also Ptolemais (TOL-uh-MAE-is) is the feminine form of Ptolemy if you liked that maybe as well! Cute NN with Mai, May, Mae! Happy Hunting mama!🖤

I think it’s kinda cool! I do think pronunciation would probably be a common issue. Could spell Tolemy so that the spelling goes with the sound?
And I think a lot of cute nicknames could work for this!

I think it’s a beautiful name

I agree with Alexandra, yes it’s a lovely name but I think they are going to live a full life of constantly correcting people, I think you’ve got to a pick name that you yourself would be grateful for in all stages of life x

I love the name! In London it’s unusual but I have heard it used before as a boys name - never as a girls though (I love the idea of using traditionally masculine names for girls)

I’m not a fan personally I wouldn’t have a clue how to say it and I think the child will have to go their whole life telling people how to say their name. Wouldn’t use it my self

Native English speakers won’t pronounce it right either 😅

Too out there

It’s a super historical name, so I think most people will definitely be surprised, but know how to say it. It’s actually very phonetically spelled without the silent P, so I think most people could probably figure it out. It’s also the name of a very famous Greek Astronomer. I say go for it, and definitely do NOT change the spelling. 😆 Go with what you love!! :)

I love it. I like the tol-uh-me pronunciation ❤️
