Neocate or Nutramigen (nutramigen supplier issue)

Our baby has been on Nutramigen for about 5 weeks but we have been told the pharmacies in our area are unable to get it from the supplier and they could only get Neocate. After lots of tears and begging the GP for an emergency prescription we have finally got some *just before we ran out. It's a different consistency to nutramigen and I find it takes lots of shaking for the powder to dissolve. Am I doing something wrong? Also, are there any other differences that we need to be aware of. Does anyone have any opinions on which is best. I dont want baby to keep switching between milks but am also worried about supplier issues and making sure i am giving him the one that is best for him.

Neocate is higher up the milk ladder it’s amino acid based where Nutramigen has cows milk proteins in which are broken down more so that baby’s can digest them. My little boys couldn’t tolerate the nutramigen so was moved upto neocate LCP then to neocate syneo. The neocate is harder to mix and if you do it ends up bubbly. It’s just patience with it xx

Also if you wanted to stay on Nutramigen it may be worth going around to difference pharmacies and many of them use different suppliers. If your baby is tolerating it especially!

@Beverley thank you so much for letting me know. How do you get yours mixed without being too bubbley?

@Beverley I tried, we went to 3 different ones- 2 big brands and a smaller one. My usual pharmacy didn't even tell me they couldn't order it- they just sent the prescription back to the GP 2 days after having it! So by the time we found out we were about to run out. Luckily baby was a bit poorly and taking less feeds which meant the rub lasted a bit longer

My daughter was on Nutramigen, my friend’s daughter was on Neocate. I tried my daughter on Neocate once and she refused the bottle lol. My friend was always complaining about powdery bits in the bottle and used to shake vigorously. Nutramigen was definitely miles better, in my opinion. As for Nutramigen, I ran into the same problem as you - GP suggested a prescription for 6m supply at a time so that way I was never worried about running out. Can you ask yours to do that? I went to the big Tesco in town and they just ordered it directly from the company themselves and I was able to collect 24 boxes of 6 tubs about 2 days after.

@Neena Gosh i have been looking for nutramigen everywhere nearby but only one pharmacy would able to provide me 2tins for two weeks… let me try to ask my gp to issue the prescription today and see whether i could get some from tesco Thanks so much love xxx

Thats good to know! I'll see if I can get to a tesco pharmacy

@Tracey just called the tesco pharmacy in my town they said that they r out of stock as well its a supplier issue…

@Tracey my gp recommends me to move up to nutramigen 2 but i do not think its in stock as well. Going to pharmacy to look for no2 tomorrow

@Tracey I like swirl it. I was recommended by the dietian to add a drop of vanilla essence if baby didn’t drink it but I only use for tops ups as my baby is breastfed so we get by xx

Hey all- after a few days on neocate baby isn't pooing much at all. Is he constipated do you think or is it normal for neocate?x

@Tracey it’s prob his body is still getting used to the new formula? Does it get any better?

My little one was on Neocate before being moved to Alfamino (due to manufacturing issues we couldn’t get Neocate) Neocate is VERY thin, so you might have to ask the GP for carobel to thicken it up a little
