Delivery at sturgeon hospital

Hi mamas! Just wondering about anyone’s experience who recently delivered at Sturgeon hospital in St. Albert. What is the atmosphere like? Did you have to share a room? How was the care?

I delivered at sturgeon! Care was really good. Private room for delivery had a shower a sitz bath but we had a shared recovery room which was tough as the baby next to us cried all night. We were told initially from my prenatal Dr's we would have a private room but the hospital said they were reserved for covid patients even tho multiple rooms were open

My experience with 2 babies delivered as sturgeon is that the labour and delivery portion is amazing! They take great care of you during that time, the nurses are great. The recovery is not quite as nice. Shared room, long wait for doctors, and not as much support as you might need. They are perfectly responsive and do what they can to get you what you need, but you can sorta feel that they are stretched thin in the recovery wing.

I delivered there! During labour I did not have to share a room. The nurses were amazing. Bethany was the nurse that stayed with me and she was amazing with me. During recovery we did end up sharing a room later on in the day but not right away. Doctors took forever and I felt dismissed because I had a huge headache from the epidural. I needed a patch up job 3 days later at grey nuns (was at my parents home to heal and it was closest hospital to them). Also felt like the pediatrician had a speech ready to explain stuff on baby cause he said almost word for word to the other mom I shared a room with later on. I feel they need more staff in the recovery wing, like they do in the labour wing. So labour, good, recovery, could be better but not terrible. And definitely have someone bring you guys food!!!!

If the recovery room is shared, how does visitation work? Was your support partner able to stay overnight? Or your family?

@Keyara so you're allowed 2 people during visitation. If your partner is there with you, that is technically 1, so 1 other person can come and visit. My parents both came at the same time and they kinda allowed it but they were the only visitors I had when I was alone in the room. My hubby stayed overnight, they have a chair ready for your support partner to sleep. It's not comfy lol but it'll do.

I just delivered there on June 14. The staff and the doctors there are amazing. I stayed in the L&D room my whole time (June 13-16) as I had lost ALOT of blood during delivery (don’t want to scare anyone but if you want details you can message me). I honestly can not thank the nurses there. All wonderful and so helpful. Good luck mama! I hope you have a safe delivery and a positive experience!!

@Akreeti thank you! Hopefully I don’t have to stay there too long, and we can relax in the comfort of our own home after baby’s arrival

@Keyara I gave birth on Aug 20 at 12:02 pm, went into recovery around 130 to 2 pm, and was there until the 21st, didn't get discharged until about....24 hrs later. Only reason why is cause the doctors took forever.
