Extreme Fear of Upcoming C-Section

I have a c-section on Monday and I am absolutely petrified. I have had the worst month of my life, I am in serious distress. I am extremely scared that the spinal block will creep up to my chest and numb my lungs/diaphragm and/or even higher making me feel like I am drowning, like I can't breathe (even if I can actually breathe, it's the feeling of not being able to breathe that is traumatizing). I will panic, I will feel like I am dying. Please tell me that this is extremely rare... I read too many posts on Reddit of women having this experience of "high spinal block". They are going to have to sedate me before giving me the spinal block, I won't be able to go through with this. Help me. I am already traumatized.

My spinal did not do this to me, my upper chest and arms were tingly but no where near going numb, Or unable to move or feel them

Hey hun, I was you 2 years ago. Found out I’d need a c section 3 days before I had my daughter. I was so scared. The spinal isn’t too bad, just a pinch. If you start to feel sick, dizzy or any uncomfortableness let them know! The anaesthesiologist can up or lower it to help make you feel more comfortable. It will all feel sooo fast too, I was in there for awhile but it felt like 15 mins. You’ll lay down and it feel like 1 min later you’re hearing your babies cries and seeing them pass baby over to be weighed. Talk to your nurses about to doing skin to skin with baby right then and there, you’ll get to have them on your chest for the rest of the time. It’s a scary thing when it’s unknown to you, it will be okay and you will be okay too❤️❤️ manifest it for yourself. Tell yourself you’ve got this and you’re going to do amazing!! It’s okay to feel the way you do, most of us do with our first c section. But you’ve got this girl ❤️❤️

Honestly the spinal didn’t hurt at all. The most uncomfortable part for me of the whole thing was the cannula in my hand for the drip, super uncomfortable but not painful. My elective section was the calmest I’ve ever been in a hospital. The staff are incredible and will make you so comfortable. I had the radio on, they never used any theatre lingo or even told me they’d started. They knew I was nervous and they had me laughing and talking about the weather. It was over in a flash. The spinal procedure for me was fine. They numb you, you sit on the table edge and touch your ankles and that’s it. Within seconds they moved me flat and it felt like I was stepping into warm water. Only took a few minutes in total. I could feel my arms, my chest. In fact I did immediate skin to skin and held my girl on my chest.

I’m a nervous patient but my elective birth experience was so positive that I’m actually super excited to do it all again. I walked into theatre in my Nikes, next time I will skip! 💜 xx

This is extremely rare. I had an emergency section and despite the circumstances it was fine, had an elective section 7 weeks ago and it was a lovely experience. I felt so nervous I was shaking like a leaf, once I saw her it all melted away. I came over quite tired half way through but I think it was adrenaline. If you feel absolutely anything at all (woozy achey, sick etc), the anesthetists are great. When I started to feel a bit tired/woozy, they adjusted some bits and I was ok. You can choose your own music too, that definitely helps you relax. Speak through your fears with the consultant and anesthetist, it should help put your mind at rest.

I’ve never heard of that happening and didn’t even know it was a thing! I had an emergency c section and I was really scared going in because lots of people make out like a c section is this horrible surgery that’s awful to recover from etc. I was pleasantly surprised that the anaesthesia is fine, the operation is quick and fine, and the recovery also was totally fine. Same as with vaginal births there are some scary stories out there but try not to read them xx I chatted away to the anethiatists the whole time because I was nervous and they happily rambled along with me, it was a great distraction

planned c section, anxiety 1000% I told the anesthesiologist that i wanted something for anxiety. They can sedate you but that effects baby so we decided on having gas for when they put in the spinal and on hand for the procedure. He also counted for me to breathe in and out not that I could hold my breath lol. Essentially got high whenever I was scared and then repeated that whenever I needed it. Which was about every 2 to 5 minutes. Was nice because I was in control of how much I had and when. Except had one super freak out and he helped me put on mask.

I think your best bet is to stay off of the Internet. I was guilty of that, and scared the living hell out of myself for no reason. I just had my C-section on Tuesday and you literally don’t feel a thing. I know you’re scared now, but during the process motherly instincts naturally kick in and let off a dosage of endorphins and you feel blissful in that moment.

I’ve had two and personally did not have any tingling in my upper half of my body ! Best to try and think positive it’s a every day procedure and everyone’s there to help and make you feel as comfortable as possible ! And you’ll meet your beautiful baby ❤️ everything happened so quickly it was over before I knew it and I was holding my son most magical feeling of me life once you get to the end part .

STOP READING REDDIT!!! I've performed well over 500 sections and have seen a high spinal maybe 5 times in 12 years! The anaesthetist will talk you through everything before you go to theatre and can give you gas and air while it's being put in if you need it. Once baby is there you won't notice anything else, promise. Xxx

Hugs ♥️ being scared is normal and perfectly okay. Having a baby is scary and getting them out of us is even scarier lol. I’ve had an emergency C-section and 2 planned C-sections. My most recent being in April. I’m not going to tell you not to be scared because that’s not the way life works. But I am going to tell you that you’re going to get through it and you’re going to be amazed at how strong you are and what your body can go through to bring life into this world. I won’t lie to you, the epidural isn’t fun. But it’s more so them pushing on your spine to find where to insert it than anything else. You’ll feel a pinch when they put it in but you will immediately feel the numbness taking over. Nurses are there surrounding you keeping you safe from falling and the anesthesiologist is going to be there walking you through everything and checking on you the entire time. If at any point you feel nauseous or like you can’t breathe, they will lower it. You’re going to do great!

I’ve had 3 c sections. All three under different circumstances and not once did I have this. I was numb to just below my boobs. But I could breath fine, I was trying to throw up during two of my sections because it was a sicky pregnancy and then it can be a side effect of the spinal. And your teeth chattering. Every time my teeth have gone like I’m freezing cold but I’m fine. But that’s also a normal side effect. Pain wise for the spinal, most I felt was the pressure of it initially when they numb that area. Honestly though you don’t feel anything, my first two I do not remember feeling the tugging or anything like that. I do with my most recent but I think I was hyper aware due to things that have happened in my pregnancy. It’s scary, it’s going to be I was nervous for all of mine and I knew exactly what was what by the third and I was still just as nervous as the first. But just try and remember that when you hear your baby crying it’ll all go away and non of it will matter!

I just had a c section a month and a half ago. The worst part of the spinal for me, was the numbing shot they gave to numb the area before the spinal. The only side effect I had was nausea, but they gave me something for that. I was only numb where I was supposed to be, and could breathe just fine.

Hello lovely! I had read things about this and was scared too, I actually asked the anaesthetist about it the morning of my section as I was worried, he assured me it is extremely rare! I was soooo nervous before the operation about everything but honestly, it was amazing! Everyone in there from the surgeon to the midwife’s are so reassuring and lovely too and check in on you constantly. As mentioned above I had my own playlist on and the anaesthetist actually filmed her being born. I would happily do it all over again! Please try not to worry, you got this mama! ❤️

I had a c-section a week ago and was anxious too. I have panic attacks that sometimes lead to fainting so I empathize with where your mind is right now. My spinal felt tingly and warm/ numb starting from my feet. It didn't reach my chest. I did feel nauseous but said so right away and was given something immediately which stopped it. I recommend talking with whoever your support person is who will be in there with you. I asked my husband to keep talking to me about absolutely anything, that I'd tell him if I needed a new topic / my thoughts were wandering. It helped a ton. We ended up talking about my nieces and nephew, how excited they'll be to meet their cousin.

Don’t read anything negative anymore. Switch your mindset and only welcome in the positive. We are very very powerful at manifesting something so make sure your eye is on the prize. Also, take an Epsom salt bath, make sure you submerge your back so that you can soak your kidneys (they house fear in the body) and try it bring in some relaxation. Repeat this to yourself “I’m going to have a beautiful healthy baby and I’m going to be okay”. Write it down, put it around the house, your bathroom mirror or your bedroom etc and start repeating it to yourself each time throughout the day and especially when the fear tries to sweep in. You’re not what you have read and you’re going to be okay. 🙌🏽✨☺️

UPDATE: It went so smooth! They gave me anxiety meds and I could breathe fine!

@Naomi yay!! I’m so happy to hear it went good and they were accommodating to your anxiety around the whole thing ❤️

@Naomi yayyyyy love it

@Naomi congratulations! I’m so glad that it went well! What is the names of the anxiety medicine that they gave you if you can remember?

@Tara So I was hysterical before the surgery. The anesthesiologist was very chill and told me to trust him. He gave me Midazolam and walked to the OR with me. Then shortly after laying down and having the drape up he gave me another dose, and then after baby was out he gave me a third dose. I was as happy as a clam. Yes, I forgot certain conversations with my husband and certain events, however, I remember the most important ones like baby coming out and crying and seeing my husband cut the chord and watching my baby being taken care of by the team.

I am also same thinking like u

I also had an emergency csection. No problems with the anesthetic at all. Numb where I wanted to be numb and I already got up and walked around about 4-5 hours later. Csections are so common these days and complications are so rare. I was really scared too but honestly I shouldn't have been. Talk to your doctor about it and maybe you'll find some comfort in that. And get off google!!! Google is the absolute worst as it's always worst case scenarios 😊
