Dog walking with a pram

So today I did a test run with Sheldon and the pram to see how he walking it on my own would be. (For in context, he’s a standard dachshund who will be 3 in January and is a real hound, All he wants to do is smell on a walk and he’s not bothered by anything else which does mean he has the habit of wanting to go the complete opposite direction and his walks have always really been led by him)

Safe to say, if there was a baby in the pram, someone would have contacted social services.
Things that walk taught me:
1. A new lead is 100% needed. A non retractable one which I can either attach to me or the pram as trying to move a pram with one hand is not ideal.
2. Use the pram breaks at all times when stoping so pram doesn’t roll into road.
3. Make sure his collar is on properly before we leave so I don’t run the risk of him getting off his collar like today.
4. Take someone with you at all times in the beginning.

Sheldon isn’t a big dog but he is very strong, stubborn and nervous of other dogs/people and can be reactive. Indoors he response so well to click training but outside it’s like he goes deaf!

How do you other mummas do it!?

In the early days I used a baby wrap it was far easier. But if you have the pram wrap the lead on your wrist so your hands are free or get a waist lead. Others might have other ways 😊

I would start with a normal lead not a retractable one so it’s easier to hold in your hand and the buggy at the same time. For safety of the baby I wouldn’t ever attach the lead to the buggy itself coz Altho he’s small if something scares him or another dog attacks him etc he’ll flip the buggy with the baby in it. It’s always better to be safe then sorry. Also start with short walks until he gets use to it n then build it up to longer walks. You could always have someone walking with you just along side you incase it’s gets too much so they can take the buggy or dog just for the first few walks?

Avatar

I second the handsfree lead it was a big help. I also trained my cocker to cross from one side of the pram to the other so she was either away from the road or if there was a person/another dog coming towards us I could get her out of the way without an issue.

Avatar

Thanks ladies, I felt sorry for my boy today as he wasn’t misbehaving he was just a bit stressed I could tell and didn’t help a huge group of walkers came past us and he wanted to run home. I have a non retractable lead at home which I’m going to try later or tomorrow. He walked so nicely with me towards the end when we were by a road but I think it’s because he was hot so he slowed down. Xx

I do have a baby carrier which I will probably use if I can’t get the hang of the pram walking but it’s such a shame if I can’t as we got an all terrains pram for walks due to where I live and if I can’t use it I’m going to be pissed 😂😂

Avatar

My boy is also very sniffy. My lb is coming up to two so we've had a bit of practice now. I got him a slightly longer regular lead (poppy &Ted's I found were a great length as it's long enough to not have him too close to the pram. Ideally have him on a harness rather than a collar so that he can't slip it. Then we did lots of practice. Mine likes to always be on the side of the path away from traffic which got very messy when crossing the road so I taught him a go under signal and now as we get to the other side he crosses in front of me and behind the buggy so he doesn't get me tangled. You will be a muddle the first few walks but you get into the swing of it once everyone knows what theyre doing. Mine now knows to wait for the pram to go first if we're going into an alley or somewhere where the space is tight. The more you do it the more you'll see where there are issues to work on and to begin with you'll be pulled in all directions. We've had many a close call with tipping prams 😬

Avatar

lol yes you will use the pram! I have a cocker spaniel so the wrap was essential 🫣😂

Avatar

Once you have been pushing the pram for a couple of months you will have managed to do it with one hand I have a non extendable lead for walking with the pram but I do quiet often out the baby in the sling for dog walks as it’s easier where we live the walking paths aren’t pram friendly but if baby wearing at home practice squatting down with baby in it as you won’t be able to bend over to pick the poop up

Avatar

I have a lead that can wrap around my waist, tried to walk my lab once with it like that while my son was in the pram and ended up having my trouser and panties pulled half way down my legs in the middle of my small village 🥴 I DO NOT recommend one that wraps around the waist 😬

Avatar

omg 🙈. I can imagine that would happen with labs lol. I like hands free waist leads but that’s because my dog is small/medium sized. I def would find an alternative if I had a large sized dog too lol.

Since becoming pregnant I’ve had huge issues with him even wanting to go for walks. My MIL used to take him out daily but now he won’t leave the house with her most days. Especially if I’m home. We had him done to calm him down as he was a very playful pup but it actually made him worse in some areas. He’s now very nervous and just wants to be at home. He will play ball with me and my partner indoors for hours and has zoomies every night so I know he’s happy. But I do worry sometimes that we don’t do enough for him! But then I think maybe he just wants to be with his people. He used to love other dogs but now he’s a nervous wreck around them. He doesn’t like people (especially men) coming in the house either. Before he used to just take himself away but now he barks at them excessively and only stops if I hold him. There’s been a lot of change for him and I do feel sorry for him xxx

Avatar

Oh bless you!!! I have a hyper cockapoo and she’s now an angel on the lead with a pram. Definitely no retractable lead, you also may find that a harness is more beneficial than a collar for walks? Is his recall good off-lead? I do a mix of local road walks with the lead, and some woodland/park walks off-lead with my dog. I also don’t walk her the same time every day so she doesn’t ask for walks if we’ve had a rough night 😊

Avatar

Sheldons recall is hit and and miss. He was playing with a dog off lead once, all was well, they both ran off playing and Sheldon had actually ran home! We also keep him on the lead full time now. He’s so used to it, he rarely pulls more than the lead allows. He can be a bit hit and miss with other dogs so it’s safer I keep him on. I could never let him off in the woods, he would find a scent and never come home! Sheldon very rarely asks to go for a walk. I always ask him if he wants to go, some days he walks out the front door, wees on the lamppost then wants to go back in the house 😂 xx

Avatar

Oh gosh seeing this makes me dread what my two Labradors wills be like 🤣

Avatar

I REALLY need to do a practice run with my two (rotties), now I'm defo taming some support 😂 x

Avatar

I definitely recommend it 😂 I think if im going to do walks im the future I’m going to take the car so I can control who I get in/out the car first rather than the dog trying to get out the door and me trying to get the pram out the door and then getting stuck. Xx

Avatar

@Bethany who to get out the door first is already giving me anxiety 😂

Avatar

I’m going to try going round the back next time as my hallway is rather small and at least I know I have got both dog and baby in the gate rather than trying to get the dog in the lounge whilst leaving the baby outside so I don’t have to worry about the dog bolting back out the door! So much to think about. Think I’m just going to use the baby carrier 😂

Avatar

Get one of those hands free leads !!!

Avatar

Hi don’t really have advice sorry, but have a dachshund who’s the same kind as yours. He’s lovely and likes other dogs and people, but he’s also stubborn and pretty strong. I would suggest maybe to get a good harness so if he’s pulls he woke choke himself, it’s also recommended for their backs. He also has a bad habit of moving from one side of the pram to the next I don’t know how to solve that either sorry. I use a retractable lead just to try to make it a bit more interesting. But try do some lead training in the garden if you have one that is so then he might stay on one side when your walking. Good luck x

Avatar

I have a walk belt which clips round my waist and have zip pocket for poo bags etc. It has metal loops each side to attach dog lead! Think I got it off amazon, wasn't expensive. I have a double ended lead or a halti training lead which both easily attach. For reference I have a German shepherd and she pulls and it does the job and doesn't interfere with clothes. I haven't had baby yet but I am planning on using this when using the pram or just holding her on the lead like normal with baby in a sling/carrier. Xx

Avatar

I did the same thing. I found a running leash works really well because I can have the dog attached around my waist and both hands on the pram if needed. We used lots of treats in the beginning to train walking in only one side, but I also have learned not to be afraid to bring them next to me and make them lay down to stand on the leash if I’m ever concerned that they are going to charge after something or get too excited.

Avatar

I have a 30kg English bulldog who at times can be very stubborn. I use the halti training lead which has multiple hoops and clips both ends of the lead, this allows me to attach the lead around my waist and my hands are free to push the pram, I also used a baby carrier a lot when my boy was little. A harness may be better to stop your one escaping! X

Avatar

ah that’s great that you won’t get harassed for walks once baby comes then 😊
Shame about the recall - what a pickle!! x

Avatar

I have a beagle. Get a dog walker🤣

Avatar

I had to get a dog walker, and family walked him for the first 6 months. After that, I used a sling because it was lockdown, hard work though!

Avatar

Patience, practice with lots of short walks, alternate between having baby in carrier and in pram, I found short leads are better.
Reward with small treats.
Pram clips to hold lead, make sure you hold lead when stopping never rely on the pram to hold a dog back. I'd always advise harness over a collar, you have more control overall with a harness. Good Luck ✌🏼🧿

Hey hun i walk both my 2 50kg dogs with just normal leads like rope ones if that makes sense and i just wrap them round my hands and hold the pram and they walk so much better i tried retractable and nightmare mine walk really well anyways on normal leads one of my dogs is reactivate but i have control of him but just the normal leads so much better and walking at a fast pace helps them not sniff and ponder lol but sometimes i just find a quiet green bit park the pram lol and let them do a little sniff walk they always like that x just thought i comment on what has helped my walk my dogs and what i do i love hes name by the way lol xx

wtf moment?

I have been going back and forth with my husband lately. Well not lately it’s been years. He is the best husband and father you could ask for; for two weeks. Then he’s inconsistent. It drives me mad. Then he’s back to husband and dad of the year , then back to same inconsistency. I talked to him about this last night and he said “if i was lovey dovey and acted like this all the time you’d get bored and cheat on me.”

Ok so for starters i know some of you are going to say omg omg omg super controlling omg leave omg. No im not doing that. Im happy he finally admitted his wrong doing and taking accountability for it but id like to know the deeper reason, the what the f has him thinking like this reason, the personality trait reason. He’s obviously scared I’m going to leave him; so much so that he’s doing this dumb shit to prevent it. Past trauma? What do y’all think I can do to get him to see I’m not going anywhere? I’m consistent already, I married him, we have a baby. He really is the love of my life. I have never loved another man like this before.. but this shit is for the birds and he thinks he’s keeping me doing this but in actuality it’s making me lose respect and detach.

worried about a family members baby

So this child is three months old and she isn’t being fed from 10pm till 6/7 am idk if this is normal or safe and it’s been like this since 2 months i believe as she won’t wake her for feeds she goes to the pub drinking most nights with her baby and her baby has already been in hospital with a very low temperature bc she was outside but as soon as she was in a warm car she warmed up and doctors said she was fine she lets cats play with her bouncers toys that go over her and doesn’t strap her in she is cold from what i’ve heard from other family members and they’ve tried to warm her hands and she’s wet herself at my parents and she hasn’t had a spare vest to put on her and i offered her a blanket as she didn’t have one and she declined and she won’t listen to anyone about it she’s already left the baby with my parents for the night to go out drinking and personally i couldn’t leave my three month old because my parents said she just cried and im really unsure whether to report her or not and her house smells of dog wee/poo as she’s never home to look after them and that’s not safe for the baby i understand being lonely but she doesn’t need to go to the pub every night her friends could
go
to hers or her she could go to a cafe that has closed doors not sat outside a cold pub and it’s a bit of a rough pub in my opinion

my parents are concerned btw but they say i shouldn’t report her as it’s not fair but i feel how the baby is treated isn’t fair

Does anyone else hate their partner?

I’m now a little over 2 months postpartum and I’ve struggled with genuinely just not liking my partner anymore since we found out I was pregnant last year. I catch myself just staring at him with hatred because I’m so sick and tired of his bullshit. He is just now getting a job and has not had one since THANKSGIVING!!! Meanwhile I was working full time until I finally got too sick to be able to work. I genuinely want him out of my house but I depend on him as far as driving goes bc I don’t have a car. I also still love him deep down and don’t want to put him out on the street but he’s driving me genuinely insane. Any advice?

Heartbreak

After years of trying, months of back and fourth on the fate of our marriage, indecision, fights. The whole enchilada my husband and I are separating, divorcing. Whatever. I'm so goddamn heart broken. I feel like it's a death and I'm in mourning. We have a 3 year old son and currently and for the foreseeable we are going to coparent and live together. This makes things harder because neither one of us can really move on but it's how it is. He understands and he's trying to heal too. But I can't understand why now that things are over he can be kind. He's been more amazing in the last week since I ended things than ever. Why couldn't he do that when we were together for years I begged for change, we saw a counselor I tried everything and he just wouldn't. Now he seems to turn a switch and be able to just do it all. But it's too late. My heart aches. My body aches. Love sucks.

Partner works incredibly long hours, how much do they help out?

I'm struggling. Have been for a while. I've had one break from parenting my daughter, that was for 3 hours in December when I left her with her dad.

She's 14 months old and I'm just tired. I've done every night by myself. He's out of bed at 4am and doesn't get home until 7-9pm. He drives for work, very physically tiring.
On the weekends he was doing 6 days, one weekend day off, but now has both off.

He doesn't sit on the floor and play with her, he doesn't read to her because he says she doesn't have the patience.
He will pick her up and hold her whilst he's cooking.

Recently I've been "snappy" with him.
He got back from the mechanic last weekend, she was getting onto the sofa and he put his headphones on and started to watch Netflix on his phone.
The same day I told him I was going to run her bath and to watch her whilst she was still eating, he fell asleep on the sofa.

Today he went to football after going shopping, so was out 1-3 and then from 4-8.
He got back and I was snappy.

"I don't get why you're so snappy with me"

I said - Probably because I haven't had a break since December.

"Do you think I don't know you haven't had a break. I haven't had a break", "I just won't go to work, I'll sit at home all day".

Then "do you think I like not having a connection to my child"... But that's on him? He never sits to play with her. He "doesn't see the point". He's stated that this age is boring to him.

Since she's been born, he has been to a friend's once a month. Football - He stopped going for 7months, but has been the last two weekends.

Are these not breaks?

He does do the washing/washing up/cooking/vacuuming when I haven't had a chance to; but I'm the one in charge of feeding her, naps/bedtime, teeth brushing, hair brushing, baths, dressing her, making sure she has the right shoes, appointments etc. Everything falls on me.

If your partner works ridiculously long hours, how much do they look after your child? Do you ever get a break?

Am I wrong ?

My daughter’s 1st birthday was Thursday and nobody wished her a happy birthday from her dads family but his mom watched his story. Should I put my foot down and set boundaries for them to accept accountability or should I just let them stay on that side for as long as they want and not worry about it?
