Hi everyone,
I just got the keys to my new 1 bed flat for me and my baby girl but the flat is empty and I’m only on maternity allowance which would not cover the costs for the things I need. Does anyone know about any grants I can get for buying furniture and other vital items from council or how I can do this on a budget I also need to do flooring aswell

You can speak to your council for a grant, check fb, your local charities (sometimes you may need referrals to use them) olio, just ask your local fb group if anyone has carpet they’re getting rid of :) I see people on mine giving away washing machine etc all the time

You can go on https://www.turn2us.org.uk/ and they have grant search you just fill in some details and it tells you what grants you may be able to get

Sure Start Grant you hVe up to when baby is 6months old so do it asap!! £500

Don't know your situation but when I got offered mine they gave me sofa beds and white goods. You cab also apply through Universal Credit for either loan or grant

Defo have a look on Facebook marketplace, I’ve given loads of stuff away for free on there and you can pick other things up really cheap as well

Your council can help you put down flooring and you can pay them a small amount weekly. The council can also help with giving you money for furniture and local Charities and churches can help.

Can I ask how you went about getting a council place? I’ve been given notice on my current place and am struggling to find anywhere for private rent that is suitable

you need to go to the council or fill out the paperwork on your councils website to say that you are homeless, there may also be a number. However they can make you stay until bailiffs kick you out and may get you private if you don’t qualify for council. I am going through it right now. Each council is slightly different

thank you for that, I’m so worried about bailiffs coming, it sounds like a traumatic thing to go through being physically kicked out onto the streets! Hope you’re doing okay with everything, it’s not a nice thing to go through 😕

yeah the council are pretty much waiting for the bailiffs for me and I have 3 kids 4m to 4years 😅 no matter what I do they just say stay put. It’s stressful I won’t lie

bless you, wishing you all the best x
