Can I still do skin to skin with baby of I have a C section?

Ofcourse you can considering everything is ok with baby, I couldn’t though cos they weren’t happy with his breathing etc.. they took him to neonatal after quick observations, but you absolutely can. My first baby was also breech I opted for an elective c section too but went into spontaneous labour prior to c section date hence it was treated as emergency x

My baby is also breech and my 36 wk scan is on monday coming. Were you offered the ECV (turning baby manually? Just wondering if you declined this or it didn't work? We really don't know what to do if we are offered it.

As far as im aware from antenatal classes you can still have skin to skin with a c section x

@Roseanne I've only just had my 36 week midwife appointment. She's booked me in for a presentation scan tomorrow and depending on the results, I presume they'll then offer me an ECV. I think I might try an ECV if they think there's a good chance it would be successful, but I think it depends on the exact breech position of the baby. X

Thanks for the replies girls. I was kinda disappointed knowing I'll likely have a c section so I'm just trying to manage my expectations. So I'm happy to know I can still have my baby girl on me as soon as she's born 🙂 x

@Natalie mines is frank breech. I have information the hospital provided on being breech at full term and options i will upload it when im home. Im not really wanting a section either as i get married 28th of October but if its the best option needs must i suppose x

You can birth breech if you don’t want a C-section, lots of people do so talk about that if it’s something you want to consider. You can have immediate skin to skin and delayed cord clamping with a section, you can ask for the curtain to be down so you can see them pull baby out if you want as well. But there is still chance baby can turn and there are things you can try to encourage her without needing an ECV. Look up spinning babies, hypnotherapy can also work, and I’ve heard some people put ice on top of their bump although I’m not sure how effective that is x

Yes! And you can write in your birth plan that you want skin to skin before cleaning and weighing if you like - they can do that afterwards like they would a vaginal birth!

Yes, you can have skin to skin and would recommend writing into your birth plan. For example, asking for hospital gown to be put on back to front, so it's tied at the front and you're ready for baby to be placed on chest.

Not sure if you tried to turn baby, but give the spinning babies website a go or search for videos on YouTube. I'm convinced it helped my baby turn. Moxibustion or acupuncture is also supposed to help.

How soon after the 36 week appointment do they book for the C-section? I’m 35 weeks, got the midwife this Friday at 35+2 and my baby has been breech since 27 weeks!

@Jessica I think it's not for a while. My midwife said if I decide to have an ECV, it wouldn't be done until at least 37 weeks due to the slight risk of needing an emergency C section. She also said if I opted to have an elective C section, this would be done at 38 weeks. But I think this varies with what trust your with. From what iv heard from other people, they don't give you much notice of the exact date of the c section x

One thing we were told is that sometimes your arms can be a bit weak or restrained because of IVs or wires for surgery, so to have your partner ready to hold baby on you for skin to skin even if your arms are otherwise occupied haha
