Hi, I’ve just been diagnosed with gestational diabetes, I’m 26 weeks pregnant and feeling very overwhelmed. I have an appointment with the diabetes team on Wednesday but has anyone got any advice in the meantime?
Thanks xx

Check out gestational diabetes UK website and the Facebook group - both filled with excellent advice!

I had it and you’ll be absolutely fine. They will run through what you can and can’t eat and how to test your bloods. My advice is to stay active, exercise even if it’s a walk every day. It’s basically carbs and sugar you need to be careful of. Oh and no pizza (that was my hardest part because I love pizza lol) as long as you watch what you eat and stay in the limits you should be fine. I didn’t have any meds just diet controlled. You just have to adjust to it but once baby is here it normally disappears! You’ll be fine! x

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes from 28 weeks, on metformin and insulin. The antenatal diabetes team monitored me closely right up until I gave birth to help control it. The main thing I found challenging was the carbs, as that tended to tip my glucose levels over. The gestational diabetes uk website (https://www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk/) was great for info and recipes. Working out what to eat for each meal is the hard part and can get quite boring when you’re a little limited! Feel free to message me separately if you want to chat about it x

And I agree with staying active. I was advised to go for a walk after meals which did help my glucose levels

I had it at 37 weeks. Honestly, try not to worry, they mainly advised me to change my diet. Cut out things such as potatoes and cakes ect. All the good stuff! I was given a monitor to take my blood after every meal.
And i now have to have my bloods done every year to make sure it dosen’t turn to diabetes type 2.
I was to far gone to be given tablets ( which they said they normally give )
So i can’t advise anything about that.
But try not to worry Xx

Best advice is 3 meals 3 snacks a day, no sugar limited carbs, and what’s good for one might not be good for you. We all tolerate things differently. Small walk after meals to reduce your blood sugar level before testing x

homemade wrap pizzas with low carb wraps are getting me through the no pizza with GD

Walking after meals helps and also have protein with everything you eat! I also found having babybel or protein bar before bed kept my morning levels low
