Yes it will effect him. If you’re not registered at the property then you shouldn’t be using it for your universal credit. He’s classed as a single person to his council so this could massively impact his housing and benefits as technically you shouldn’t have someone living with you if you are down as a single person

Kayleigh is right what you/partner are doing will be classed as fraudulent in the council and dwp’s eyes. You should never use addresses that aren’t yours and you’re not registered to for stuff like this. Where was you living prior to this? Where are you registered to?

I will say though, as long as he lets them know himself then it’s fine!! Not fraudulent unless you don’t say anything. It will have an affect on his single occupancy discount, but that’s just how it is. I’m not sure how it works when there’s someone on UC involved though and if they give you any leeway or not. You should probably just let UC know now & tell your partner to inform the council

I was renting privately before the baby. The baby is only 4 weeks and I moved in when I was 38-39 weeks pregnant and ended my tenancy at the place I was renting.

The baby’s dad is hesitant to change the his council band as we haven’t been getting along since the baby arrived and he claims the cost will be too much for him as I’m currently unemployed but getting SMP for 39 weeks.

Then yeah, there’s a chance it could catch up to him. I get that he’s hesitant, and really it’s up to him if he says anything or not as it’ll be on his head if it goes wrong. But you have to understand that if you claim UC and you don’t tell them that you’re living together it’s fraud on your end too. Completely up to you what you do with that info sweet, I know it’s a struggle.

Oh right okay I understand. The best cause of action would be for your partner to let the council know he has you living there or they’ll end up finding out and he will be held accountable and liable to pay what is owed. You could also get in trouble and in some cases you can be black listed from claim benefits

He will need to update that you are living there - he would have signed to say he will let them know about a change of circumstances, so if he hasn’t done that they will see it as fraudulent and he may have to pay back some of his housing benefit. The sooner he lets them know the Better as if they pick up on you living there without him saying, he will be done for fraud and may completely lose benefits and housing - if he tells them it would be frowned upon but better.
If your child benefit is registered to that address it won’t take them long to work it out.
Universal credit you need to complete joint application as you will need to register it at that address, you can chose which bank account it goes into so if you are worried about him keeping the money then get it paid into your count. If you don’t complete the joint application, again you can be done for fraud and cause yourself some real issues - one of the girls I knew from work got a 12 week prison sentence for fraud.

Thanks everyone! I have shown him your replies and he has agreed to add my name to his tenancy. I will not apply for UC till I see confirmation that he has actually done it. With regards to CB, I am still waiting for a response back.
