IUD

Did anyone get an IUD put in without the sedative to relax them first ? I don’t have anyone to help watch my baby afterwards so I’m considering not getting it and just dealing with the pain. How bad was it?? What’s it like ??

I didn't know that you'll get a sedative prior to the insertion. My midwife didn't offer it. Just told me to take a Ibuprofen 800 1 hour before I come to the office and relax with a heating pad afterwards. I cancelled my appointment though due to my anxiety.

It's honestly not that bad. I took some midal and then went about my day.

@Irina I think my OB just offered it to me because I was nervous about it. I don’t really want it but she seemed pretty persistent on ordering it anyways

@Alyssa oh good, that makes me feel a lot better about it.

Yeah my bf babied me but that was only because I did it and didn't make him get a vasectomy. But it's minor cramping. During I did cry a little from pressure but not like I was about to die kinda pain

Yes - I had an IUD placed years before I got pregnant. They had to place it twice as it slipped the first time. It certainly pinched & brought a tear to my eye, but it wasn’t bad. I imagine childbirth is much harder😆 I bled/spotted for a few days after & just took it easy.

I didn't have a sedative and it hurt. I have a tilted uterus and it took twice as long to put it into place, she had to remove it and redo it. I had a lot of cramping and it was hard to drive myself home. It is pretty painful getting it inserted. Once it's over it's like a bad period. I would just lay in bed and relax as much as you can with the baby.

I got mine inserted and removed without any type of sedative. They just told me to take Tylenol. I’ll never get another IUD because of how painful it was. That being said, I haven’t had any children and I’ve heard it’s less painful after kids? Idk. Even when it was in (for the 3 months I had it), I could always feel it inside me and didn’t like that.

I got one put in 8 weeks PP, and was super duper anxious leading up to it. The procedure was super quick, and the speculum was by far the most noticeable part, I didn’t even feel the measuring or inserting.

I had one at my 8 week postpartum and was perfectly fine! The insertion was mildly uncomfortable, and I had cramps throughout the evening, but ibuprofen was all I needed!

I took Tylenol about a half hour before and then took a nap when I got home wasn't too bad

I got mine with no sedative at about 11 weeks pp. I honestly didn’t feel anything except I poke when my Dr was cutting the strings and poked me a bit. Other than that, we talked about what we were making for dinner through the whole procedure lol

My was a complete spur of the moment decision so they manually dilated my cervix and everything. For me personally it was uncomfortable but wasn’t painful. They said I handled it like a champ because they have patients who have passed out from the insertion 😅 I would suggest just taking some ibuprofen about 30 minutes beforehand

Eff that! I went under general by doctors orders, he didn’t want to do it in rooms as I didn’t deliver vaginally. Was worth it too because I had undelivered material left over from my emergency caesarean

I think it varies a lot by person. I've had three inserted without any meds and I didn't think it was much worse than a pap smear. But I know plenty of other folks have a really hard time. It might be good to take something for it if they offer it.

My only other option since I’m breastfeeding my 5 week old is the pill and I do not want anymore kids and I’ve never been good at taking the pill 😅😭 I don’t love the thought of the IUD but it’s all I get for the time being.
