Anyone planning to use their disability insurance for maternity leave? Both pre-birth and for birth recovery. I purchased a policy years ago and “pregnancy” is covered as an illness, so I’d like to use it since my employer won’t pay me. Any tips are appreciated.

I would go ahead and start the process. I was out early for back pain caused by pregnancy. Go talk to your HR now and get the ball rolling I was out for a month before I started to get paid. You get 80% of your pay in NC. (Don't know if that national or state based) I have short-term disability and long-term. When the short term runs out, my long term will kick over. Be sure you have all your doctors paperwork. HR should have specific paper that they need filled out per the company they use for disability plans. Biggest one I was told was your expected leave date and expected return date, and talk to you doctor if you want to stay out a little longer post-partum they usually don't have an issue with putting you out a little longer. I am a firefighter so the normal six weeks until back to work they normally do, they did 12 weeks for me instead.

I’m planning to use short term disability. My job requires not complied with the minimum requirements of FMLA so no paid leave. People in the past have used a combination of PTO and short term disability. I think we get 60% pay when we’re on disability. With a late December due date, I’ll especially need the disability because I won’t be able to use that much vacation since we can only carry over a limited amount and I won’t have accrued any for 2024.

My employer requires it. We get 6 weeks of paid maternity leave (paid at 80% of our normal salary) - the first 7 days is paid by my employer, the rest is through short term disability.
