Any tips on what to do if you’re getting recurrent blocked ducts? I’ve never had a problem we’ve EBF for 8 months and in the last week I’ve had several!

Happened to me! Everything was fine then at month 3 I started getting recurrent blocked ducts and it continued until I stopped breastfeeding 😔
Do you take lecithin supplements?
no I don’t, never heard of them before what do they do? I’m going away in the next month and so I really didn’t want to start weaning till I was back, and I wasn’t even sure I was ready then but I feel like my body is trying to tell me something 😔 it’s just the same duct keeps getting blocked and it’s just getting more and more painful. X

Lecithin is an emulsifier so it helps fat and liquid mix together rather than separate (like when you put oil and water together, they separate out). It is added to some foods and drinks to stop them from separating.
The theory is that it keeps the fatty part of the milk mixed in with the liquid, to stop the fatty bits from getting stuck and clogging things up (that’s my understanding anyway!). So it keeps your milk looser and less prone to clogging.
It didn’t stop my recurrent ducts, but it 100% helped them. I forgot to take my doses for a couple of days in a row and the clogs were awful in comparison!
Do you get the clog on the same side you sleep on? That can sometimes compress the breast tissue and cause clogs. I was told to lie on my back as much as possible at night.

the lecithin is great advice I’m going to look into that as I also keep getting recurring blocked ducts in my left breast. With your recurrent ducts how long does it normally take you to shift it? I can normally do it quite quickly but with my current one it’s being so stubborn and just not shifting. I’m terrified it’s going to turn into mastitis.

mine were really variable, most of the time they’d shift within 24 hours. Sometimes I’d get some stubborn ones that would take 2-3 days. Once I had about 6 or 7 clogs all on the same boob and it took days to shift them 😭
I did find some things that worked for when I had stubborn ones. What have you tried so far?

thanks for your reply 🙂 thankfully it’s gone now it took ages to go. The thing that worked was getting my son to feed inline with the blocked duct, an ice pack, ibuprofen, gentle massage and the lechithin tablets.
