I just had my pre-op for c section next week. Haven’t stopped crying since! Consultant said that due to low iron it’s very likely I will need a blood transfusion which I’m petrified of, and also I’m 4th on the list for the day so they said there will be a lot of waiting around and I won’t be able to eat and only have sips of water beforehand, which I’m useless with at the best of times! I feel so much more apprehensive now. Has anyone else had either of these experiences and can give some positive reassurance?

Ah no, sorry to hear that. My iron and B12 is quite low too, but I was never told this would be an issue for my C-section. I haven't had my pre op yet though. Can they not do an iron transfusion before next week? Did you know your iron was low before this appointment?

I wasn’t told it would be an issue either, I only knew cus I had googled. I found out iron levels had really dropped just under 2 weeks ago and have been on iron tablets for one week, which they said is probably not enough time to have made any difference.
They haven’t mentioned an iron transfusion so no idea! X

I’m getting mine tomorrow, also 4th on the list so have to go in for 10am, probably be in surgery for lunchtime all going well. With my first baby I was 5th on the list and I did have a bit of a wait purely because the girl that was in before me had bad complications so she was in there for hours, before that it was all running to plan. I can’t eat after 5am tomorrow but my hospital let you drink as much water and lucozade sport before the operation so I’m lucky in that sense. I remember last time I wasn’t bothered about not eating as I was feeling too anxious for it anyway!

My iron is also really low I’ve had two iron infusions in the past week to get my levels up as I have a planned c section two weeks today. Also have to get vitamin b12 injections every two days between now and then. With my first section I was in the afternoon and couldn’t eat after 6:30am. I just made sure the night before I had a decent filling dinner and had breakfast at 6am juat so I’d ate. Trust me you won’t want to eat on the day your mind will be elsewhere! Xx

good luck for today!! That is also reassuring to know - thank you, hope you aren’t waiting around too long today. I’m not allowed to eat past midnight for some reason but I guess all hospitals do it different!

how do they do the iron infusions? I think I’m just gonna have to stay up late and eat at like 11pm as can’t eat past midnight. Thank you! I hope your section goes well in 2 weeks! :)

It’s such a quick appointment they literally just put a cannula in and hook you up to a drip with the iron fluid stuff. It takes 15mins for it to go through then they keep you there for about half an hour to make sure you’re feeling okay. After my first one I was really tired that night and had a bit of a sore head but after my second one I was absolutely fine! You’re in and out ☺️ x
