Hi, not baby related as such but just wondering if anyone can help with a stupid question I have … I’m getting married in December and wanting to take my partners name, however how does that work? We gave our notice and I forgot to ask, but they said you sign a marriage schedule now when getting married (it will be a registry office wedding) but when/ how does the name change happen? UK BASED

When we got married you have to get your marriage license and on there will have your maiden name and the name you will be changing it to. Then when it's signed after your wedding it's sent in to the county and they send you a marriage certificate. Taking that you go to social security and they'll send you a new social with your name. Legally it's now changed. But you still need to go around and get your ID changed and all accounts changed. It's a process 🫠.
I got the duplicate copy of our certificate so I can bring that around and if it gets lost we still have the original.

Hey. I'm UK based too. You will just need to use your marriage certificate to get a new passport, change bank details etc. Its quite straightforward just quite time consuming depending on how many accounts etc you may have
thanks for the reply! So when you get married and you sign the schedule in the registry office does that still say your name before the change, then do you just go by your partners name then get in touch with passport dvla bank etc ? Sorry for so many questions just wanting to know what to expect haha does the name change on the day you marry

I double barrelled my name and just paid for some extra copies of my marriage certificate that you get in the post after you get married. Sent them off to change my driving licence, took them to the bank etc. I let work know and will change my passport when it runs out. I can’t remember there being an official changing your name document, it’s just up to you to let the relevant people/ agencies know!

Yes so the marriage certificate will show your maiden name and will show that you have been married and your partners surname. From a legal perspective (as I understand) your name is only officially changed once you update your passport. See the attached image for steps x
thank you for replying, really helpful stuff there thanks! So if not through deed poll is it all still legit changing your name? Would it ever not be valid including if you change everything including passport/dvla etc
