Hey girls, I’ve had an appointment with an anaesthetist today due to being referred for having Spina Bifida occulta and needing to know my options for labour pain relief.
My plan is for a natural water birth with just gas and air, but they basically need to know what my spine looks like in case I need to have an epidural/spinal for a c-section. I have to have an MRI to check, otherwise my only option if I end up needing to have a c-section is to go under a general anaesthetic which I want to avoid at all costs! 😣
Anyone else in the same boat and had an MRI whilst pregnant? I have done a little research but of course anxieties in pregnancy aren’t great so any advice would be appreciated xx

I had to have 3 and was assured it was completely safe x

I had one on Saturday at 31 weeks. Was assured all was fine for the baby but just couldn’t have it was contrast (the injection)

Thank you both ☺️, yes she’s put down no contrast. It’s just, as with most things in pregnancy, they just don’t really have much evidence-based research do they! The benefits outweigh the risks in terms of avoiding general anaesthetic for me I think.
Do you mind me asking what for/where you had MRI’s?x

I had an mri on my head a few weeks ago and was told it’s completely safe. They only avoid in your first trimester apparently x

Apparently I’m not allowed an mri whilst pregnant

annoying they won’t let me have one for my head because I’m pregnant and told me to contact them after baby is born to arrange it

that’s strange. They may not feel it’s an ‘emergency’ for you to have one as such? At 16 weeks they told me to wait until after but I was becoming more ill so it became an emergency and I had to have one x

I’m assuming they base it on ‘necessity’ and whether they think it’s absolutely needed whilst pregnant or it can wait until after?
I need to have this MRI because otherwise I won’t be able to have an epidural/spinal should I choose/need to for labour and delivery x

I had one in my first pregnancy due to potential complications with the baby. The MRI was actually for her and her brain. She’s almost 4 and absolutely fine ☺️

I had one at 20 weeks! Was absolutely fine it’s totally safe, was allowed to lay on my side too for comfort x

There is no radiation with an MRI without contrast (and even the contrast they use is safe after 1st trimester) so no risk to baby or mum. X

There is no known risk of MRI (when compared to the obvious risks of ionising radiation in XR/CT scans) however if a scan can be avoided in pregnancy and delayed until after it will be as remember MRI only started in 1970s and there are some potential risks with the contrast we have been using for years only just being identified, at the end of the day all medicine is risk vs benefit , absolutely makes sense to get spine checked during pregnancy as will have a very real impact on your labour when the time comes, but an otherwise ‘routine’ scan of something else may well be worth waiting until after childbirth

Thanks all, your replies are much appreciated, I feel more at ease now! ☺️ xx

Hey sorry to jump on your post but my daughter is currently waiting to be tested for SBO. I have no idea what this could mean for her… have you had problems with it? X
