I am not sure what the point of my post is, other than just a little release!
My baby was very poorly over the weekend with tonsillitis and a viral infection on top of that giving him a spotty rash all of his body Inc inside his mouth.
Before this, he was EBF and never took a bottle. Thursday and Friday he just couldn’t latch at all due to the blisters in his mouth (hospital were useless and I ended up asking for a syringe to feed him in a&e as it had been 18 hours since he last fed).
Since his throat has got better (or is getting better I should say) he just is not interested in the breast at all. Just giggles and bites my nipple. So he’s now having a mixture of BM and formula in sippy cups.
For months and months I’ve wanted him to take a bottle and wanted a bit of freedom, but now it’s gone, I feel so emotional 😭
I wish I knew the last time he fed would have been the last time, and I would have cherished it just a little longer.
Such mixed emotions, I don’t know how to feel 💔
On a side note - how on earth do I now get baby to sleep? He has always bf to sleep. He now is drinking out of sippy cups and I’ve had to go for a drive to get him to sleep for every single nap and night time.
🫠🥴💔

Firstly I hope your okay, it sounds like you've had a tough weekend!!
Breastfeeding refusal can be common when there poorly, well done for getting them to take a cup/bottle!!
If breastfeeding is something you'd like to continue with do you have a local breastfeeding support group? You can reach out to them for support with the grief that follows at the end of your journey too.

Oh bless you I'd be gutted!! You can have a big dip in emotion when you stop due to the oxytocin no longer being released aswell so be kind to yourself ❤️
Thank you ladies.
I have been in contact with a local group, and I’ll definitely be visiting when my baby is all better.
Why do we want them to grow up so quickly, then when they do, it actually hurts your heart?!

Will he take the sippy cups to feed to sleep with? He still may latch again so the group might he good (if you still planned to keep bf obviously).
If he won't I'd start layering other sleep associations, so things like rocking, patting, bouncing, shushing all that kinda stuff, find what works and go from there then 🥰
Hope you're OK lovely 💜

Nursing strikes are super common at this stage, especially when ill! Keep trying and defo get support. Hopefully it works for you.
I have no idea how to get my baby to sleep without boob 😂 occasionally rocking works but mostly not haha

Oh I'm so sorry you're going through this. We had a nursing strike a month ago for 2 weeks where he barely fed and only when asleep or just waking. It was so tough emotionally as like you, I wasnt ready, i felt sad and also rejected. Your emotions are valid and understandable. Baby may be able to relatch if this is something you would like to try, your local group can help advise with this. My babe is feeding back to normal now and it took a lot of skin to skin, baby led feeding and feeding during naps. I also had to protect my supply by pumping when he didn't feed. However, if he wants to wean himself you should feel so proud of where you got to, even if the end wasn't how you planned it. Take care of yourself and allow yourself to feel sad, its a loss and a change but you will be able to comfort babe to sleep, once you both find how that looks. And you will always always have that special bond. Follow the breastfeeding mentor on Instagram, she has some things on weaning.
Thank you all for your kind messages ❤️
Originally, I only wanted to breastfeed for 6 months, so I am SO proud of myself for getting this far.
For so long I’ve been wanting him to take a bottle (or sippy) as I’ve been feeling a little trapped with BF, so maybe this is a silver lining of him being poorly?
My brain tells me that it would be silly to get him back feeding again as I def wanted to stop by 12 months, it’s just taking my heart a little longer to catch up!
I’m just hoping that I can find a little routine to help get him to sleep soon once he’s feeling better. He has his sippy cup last thing before bed, then I try to cuddle/rock him, but he’s not a very snuggly baby and just tries to get away from me the whole time 😂 I won’t take that too personally haha!
Thanks ladies 😘 what a lovely little community this is x
